I have been a single-fandom, single-pairing reader for... about twenty years, now, during which I have read literally tens of millions of fanfic. Sure, I've had occasional flirts with other things besides Drarry, but nothing has been able to capture my attention for long the way Drarry has. This fic, though, this fic has broken my streak. After all this time, after all this reading, this fic has made me change my mind. A fic for a fandom I've never seen, in a universe I've never been particularly interested in. Yet, I'm now desperate for more like this. I want to see Din and Luke grow together in so many ways, just as you have had them grow together here.
Bravissimo.

Ten years was worth the wait for Faith Wood's next fic. Seamlessly pulling together threads of different stories I've read before, Faith Wood masterfully weaved them together to create a story that feels entirely new. It shouldn't be this way -- it should feel like a warm, familiar trope, but it doesn't. "Beholden" was worth every minute of waiting. I can only hope it won't be another decade until we see their next work -- but if it is, I'll be first in line to read the next story regardless.

Summary
Harry's assignment was simple. Close out Draco Malfoy's missing persons case so he can be declared dead.
But who's making withdrawals from Malfoy's vaults? How is a death omen-turned-Unspeakable involved? Is an organization known as the Moirai to blame?
Harry brushes it off until he can't. Until The Prophet is flooded with sightings of dead people. Until Robards throws himself on his sword. Until Ron turns on his own family. Until Harry scarcely trusts his own reflection in the mirror and trusts the stranger in his bed even less.
Until all that stands between war and peace is Harry, a name plate, a stadium of murderers, and Draco Malfoy.
God save the Ministry.

Well, well, well. In the same way that I had to re-read kitsunealyc's "Eternally Consistent" several times to make sure I understood how the intricate mesh of foreshadowing and looping worked, this fic is one I'm sure to revisit again. A dramatic description of a world where identity is never provable, where the face of the stranger you pass on the street might be your own, and what dark choices heroes must make when their backs are against the wall.

Narcissa Malfoy is missing. Harry has no idea why the Unspeakables want him tagging along on the investigation, but he's not complaining. His job has never been this interesting.
His job has never before involved observing a fit, long-haired Draco Malfoy around the clock, or noticing how good he smells, or burning his breakfasts. They're not paying him to ask questions, or notice when something is terribly wrong, or take matters into his own hands.
Unfortunately, these are the things Harry Potter does best.

In some ways, I feel like this fic is a mirror of another incredible work, eleventy7's "Running on Air". There are parallels in the plot -- both are missing persons stories -- but for me, their similarity is more in the way that they feel the same, and in the ways in which they are opposites. One is about finding your way into the world, the other about finding your way home. One is about finding Draco, one is about finding what Draco has lost. Both are about obsession, both are about love. And they both have this almost otherworldly feel to them, as if plucked directly from the æther, exposing the strands that bind the world together.

Summary
Draco can think of only one way to outclass his pleat-front-khaki-wearing politician ex, and that’s by making headlines with an obvious upgrade. And who better to upstage the cheating bastard than the Saviour of the World, Harry Potter himself? Sure, Potter is a little rough around the edges in ripped jeans, a rumpled tartan shirt, and a permanent scowl. Draco reckons a haircut and a shave wouldn’t hurt, either. But Potter is also in need of a Healer willing to keep his secrets, and Draco is just the man for the job. It’s a perfectly reasonable exchange. They need only attend a couple parties arm-in-arm, smile nicely for the paparazzi, and tolerate each other long enough to convince everyone they’re smitten. In return, Draco will keep Potter alive and in one piece.
But it isn’t long before Draco realises he might be in over his head, because Potter is ten tonnes of trouble packed into a leather jacket, and seems keen on hurtling himself towards death on the back of a flying motorbike. And that says nothing of Potter’s penchant for fire-breathing beasts and things that bite.
Ah well, at least they’ll have some fun while it lasts. After all, Draco always did like a bit of danger.

I love the portrayal of Draco in this fic, an immensely capable Healer who just might, secretly, have a heart. The side characters are well-developed, the plot well-thought out--and the smut is... my gosh. Get a towel and a fan; you're gonna need them.

For a first (and heartbreakingly, thus far only) expedition into Harry Potter, xiaq comes out of the doors with a blockbuster to challenge some of the best and most experienced Drarry authors. Each character has a magnificently rich personality, whether they are our starring couple, or the friends in the background. I have to give extra credit for the portrayal of Auror!Ron -- who would think nothing of taking an illegal portkey rather than schlep back across London to the office. xiaq, I dearly hope that you write more in this fandom; your style of writing is nonpareil.

In retrospect, it shouldn't have been as much of a surprise as it was that I fell head over heels for "Mistakes", despite everything. After all, the other fic which breaks so many of my rules for fics I enjoy was also authored by sebastianL, in the same universe nonetheless. Yet "Mistakes" achieves a goal even "The Man Who Lived" was unable to; of all the literally tens of thousands of fics I have saved, the millions upon millions of words of fanfic I've read, this is the only non-H/D, OMC pairing in my favorites list. And oh, has it earned its place there, heartrendingly sweetly. I beg you, I plead with you, sebastianL, give us a sequel. I can't contemplate never finding out what happens next to Baltasar and Neville. And brava!

In my years of reading fanfic, there are a handful of times which I've come across a story so captivating and well-crafted that I almost wished it could be divorced from the fandom it was in so it could stand on its own, rightly atop the Times Bestseller List. "Architects of Memory" is one of those stories. lilithilien gives us a plot mesmerizing in its intricacies, twisting and turning and showing us a world that brings us both warm familiarity and gasping differences. This fic is on my short-list of Must Reads, and I strongly urge anyone who has not read it to drop whatever you're doing, forgo your responsibilities, ignore your friends and spouses, and dedicate the time to finishing it. It is worth every second you will spend on it.

Following a bizarre accusation in a brutal crime, Harry Potter finds himself a loner and an outcast, as Draco Malfoy reigns supreme in the innermost social circles. A vengeful optician, a fifteen-year-old homeless Squib, and Harry and Draco's penchant for charitable giving all come into play as Blaise Zabini makes an unusual bet with Draco. Per fest prompt, loosely inspired by George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion (1912) and the movie She's All That (1999). [HP/DM] [SM/OFC] [PLATONIC DM/AG] [PAST PP/DM] [PAST HP/GW] [EWE] [POST-HOGWARTS]

Benefaction is one of the Great Books of the Harry Potter fandom, with a plot that masterfully plays on both the Harry Potter books and Pygmalion. As a character study, it is unparalleled; Slytherincess delicately shows how one selfish, obtuse, and miserly man responds when his eyes are (inadvertently) opened to the troubles of the world around him. The original characters are rich and complex, and the personality of our Harry and Draco are consistent and true. The writing is excellent, and the plot a hilarious spin on the prompt. If you have not read this story, put it at the top of your list; I promise, you will not be disappointed.

This story is one of those that makes me wonder at the ability of writers to create universes whole cloth from seemingly thin air; the closest thing to conjuration that us Muggles are capable of. There's no secret element to this story that I haven't read in other stories, no new theme or twist I have never read, no new puzzle piece to add to the picture. Yet though I have read stories of our Harry and Draco falling for each other many thousands of times, this story feels magically, wholly new. From the vindictive machinations of cloaked bureaucrats to the simplicity of Harry and Draco sleeping side by side, Variation manages to be something more than the sum of the well-worn tropes that comprise it.

Pasta, procedural justice, potions addiction, and pining combine together to make this simple, delightful story one well worth reading. "Strange Bedfellows" gives us a perfect demonstration of how people are rarely what they seem on the surface and the joys that can happen when you open your mind to new, unconsidered possibilities. Harry, our sweet, oblivious Harry, is wonderfully portrayed as he moves through his five stages of Draco: revived obsession, panicked protectiveness, slow détente, burning desire, and, finally, sweet acceptance. Fluff, but delightful fluff.

Looking back over Blood and Fire, I have to confess that my favorite part of the story is the nontraditional reversal of Harry and Draco's attitude towards bravery. In this story, Draco stands bravely to face his feelings and his responsibilities, his hurts and his wants, where Harry flees from them. Yet the author should be credited that this switch seems totally and utterly normal, almost even unremarkable. Draco stayed, and Harry left; the sun rose, and the sun set. As in all things, though, with each new day, the opportunity to fix old hurts arises.

It's hard for me to point to a particular section of "The Light More Beautiful" that made me fall in love with the story. It has many of the hallmarks of stories which I dearly enjoy: strong writing (as always from the illustrious firethesound), a brilliant inventor Draco, a passionate yet silly Auror Harry -- even some of the kinks that I confess to searching out. But unlike many others, there's no one thing, no seductive second or magical moment, perfect paragraph nor charming clause that I can say, yes, here, this is where the fic burrowed into my heart.
Instead, just as the relationship between Harry and Draco grows almost without them noticing, one can merely look up once they have fallen and say, oh.

Bookmarker's Notes
One of my pet peeves in post-war fic is when things go back to normal when the fighting is over. For those who have danced with Ares, nothing is ever the same again. This is especially true for a Ministry that was taken over (for the second time) by the enemy and its powers turned against the population at large. For every reaction there is an equal and opposite reaction, and "Executioner's Summer" describes a Ministry whose pendulum has swung hard to the other side indeed: a Ministry determined to sate the populations lust for vengeance, a Ministry for whom mercy has been extinguished in favor of strength, and an unlikely soldier of truth to stand against them.
Brava!

Though I feel that this portrayal of Draco is a bit AU, if only because I doubt he has that much pep in him, "Twice as Much as an Earthquake" is still evidence of firethesound's brilliance. A twist on the trope of Harry dragging Draco through insane adventures, Draco's one-man guerilla campaign against Filch -- for all-too Slytherin reasons -- is a delightful read. I can sense the sigh in Harry's voice as well as the laughter from my own.

For so many reasons, "Who we are in the Shadows" is a story that's close to my heart. For its brilliant depiction of a touch-starved Harry, to the delicate way it handles the complexities of Lycanthropy, to its vivid depiction of the art of intelligence gathering, the story never misses a step. When I put it in the category of such others as Lomonaaeren's "Changing of the Guard" and Tessa Crowley's "Chaos Theory", you know it's good.

With clockwork and celtic magic, Like Clockwork has one of the more developed understandings of how curses work. It gives you a feeling for the malevolence that comes with them, the intricacies that come with breaking them, and the ways in which magic can go wrong.

When I say that this fic is on par with "Oath Breaker" for a well-developed mythos around Dark Magic, you know it must be incredible. Vichan delves into the political elements of the tensions between the light and the dark, the multifronted Second War of You-Know-Who. Those who follow my reviews know that I am loathe to read any fics that are works in progress, nevertheless series that are so -- but this one, I'm happy to have broken my rule for. Brava!
