Summary
It’s mesmerising, following the fluid lines of the sculpture from the neck to the tail, each detail so delicately carved and shaped it’s impossible to imagine that it’s been carved from stone.
He’s reached a hand out before he knows it, stroking one finger carefully along the raised spines of the dragon, along its back. It’s warm beneath his hand, despite all the stone around him being cold. It’s definitely some kind of stone though, maybe a refined obsidian of some kind? It seems to swallow the light around it completely.
His finger is warm where he is touching the statue.

Summary
On moonless nights, Molly doesn’t sleep. It doesn’t feel right, not when there’s so much darkness. It makes his skin crawl in a strange way, a way that feels foreign and familiar at the same time. He can’t explain it, and neither can he understand it.
So in the absence of the moon, he finds himself led to the only other source of light.
The campfire has long since burned out, hiding away their little alcove in the shadows of trees, bushes and grass. Still, a little piece of light emits from the circle of carts - three dancing balls of light in the hands of a familiar wizard.

Summary
Caleb's least favorite part of late night watches has always been waking the next member of the party, who immediately assumes he's a threat and gives him a very unneeded adrenaline spike. Mollymauk has historically been the worst, and he's been trying different ways to wake up the tiefling without getting his hand cut off by a scimitar. Many different methods had proved unsuccessful, but Caleb was always willing to go the extra mile in pursuit of research.

At precisely thirty-eight minutes past two in the morning, Caleb jolts awake, sitting up in bed and heaving for air as if his life depends on it, chest rising and falling at an unnaturally fast pace.
At precisely thirty-nine minutes past two in the morning, he has to bite down hard on his own tongue to keep himself from vomiting, feeling so sick with himself that bile begins to rise in his throat.
He blinks two, three times, trying to stop the hot angry tears that are pooling in the corners of his eyes, threatening to spill and run down his cheeks at any second. His hands go to his head, pressing at his ears to try and stop the ringing, to block out the screams that still haunt and follow him, even now that he’s awoken from his nightmare.
Caleb awakens from a nightmare. Molly is already awake, and helps him out of it.

Dean grunts in response.
“You can’t possibly still be tired. Like, I feel like this should be physically impossible.”
“Tell that to my melatonin levels.”
“How do you know what melatonin is?”
Dean does his best to roll his eyes under the cover of his eyelids. “Jesus, Sam, I’m not an idiot. Will you shut up so I can sleep?”
He hears Sam huff. “Ya know, if you wanted to nap, you could always use that thing you have called a bed.”
“Not the same,” Dean grumbles. His body doesn’t get all loose when he’s laying in his bed watching horror movies. The synapses that slow their firing contentedly seem to be wired to that same invisible bodily response of the outside world, and apparently being in the openness of his family’s space turns his brain into mush. “Now unless someone’s dying, I’m beggin’ you to shut up.”

When Ben moved away for college, he called his mom three times a day for the entire first year. She always picked up. The only reason he stopped in second year (cut down to just twice a day) was because she, ever so gently, reminded him the she also had things to attend to. He still calls his mom most days, and visits for dinner at least once a week, if not twice.

Ben knows that most people don't love as loudly as he does, that people don't cling the way he does with their fingernails to the edge of anything they can get ahold of. He knows this. That doesn't mean he understands it, but he's starting to.
