So, when he does wake up, somehow able to function with both the weight of infinite knowledge and the King In Yellow screaming in his head, he's a bit surprised. But no matter. Now he has a new goal: Find Avery.
Or: Derek survives and the first thing he does is track down his new boyfriend.

Mildly high pitched, with a bit of a rasp that made him sound like he could be 12 or 20. “Did you… find me?” Derek asked.

"Yes." Avery answers with no hesitation.
"You won't leave?"
"No."
Derek's expression softens. Avery could see it in his eyes behind the shadow of his gold helmet.
Then, without warning, Derek steps forward and pulls Avery into a hug.
Avery stiffens instantly at the sudden contact, his cheek brushing gently against the cold surface of Derek's armor. His hands awkwardly remained on his sides— clueless on where to put them. He couldn't exactly relax under his embrace. Not when he didn't know what this hug actually meant.
"What's in your inventory?" Derek asks.
Avery is taken aback once more. "What?"
"What's in your inventory?"
And that's all it takes. A moment of distraction— and a decisive motion as he shoved Avery backward.
From then, Avery's cry echoed. "Wait!"
That was all that Derek remembered before everything went black. Or at least, that was the only part that truly mattered.
Or
Derek survives but now has to live with an ancient god within him.
It goes precisely the way it shouldn't.

And, with that, he knew so much more than he would like to have known. This caused the knowledge of Avery's actions, mannerisms, and eventual psychological torture to softly wrap around his mind like a soft haze. A blessing and a curse.

A reimagining of Destroying a World That Doesn't Exist.
Oh, Avery.
It'd come to Avery.
A man he'd come to know, every detail.
Every crevice of his brain, his own soul inside and out.
It made sense for him to try and save Avery.
But it didn't make sense for Avery to try and sacrifice himself for a man he did not know.
For him.
Derek cannot save Avery, or deter him from leaving, nothing he says will work. Avery refuses to leave, he won't leave Derek to be nothing but a mere sacrifice. So, what happens when Avery decides to invoke only part of the spell?
Could the King hold power over both Derek and Avery? The ability for his total power to be stretched between the two men?

He looks through the house. Avery's mother is watching the ball drop, His sister and brother bicker over alcohol. Fireworks thunder outside. Derek revels in the celebrations. He won't get another. Avery's sobs are drowned out by the noise below. He extends his oblivion-touched hands, but cannot reach him.
