As he reflects back on his first year at NRC, he can’t pinpoint any specific interest or an incident that proved he had what it took to become a powerful mage like they were. He couldn’t see himself fighting to protect others, or being a leader, or throwing himself into work.
In fact, he couldn’t see anything when he thought of what he wanted to do.
Because every time he thinks ahead, he sees anyone but himself.
Does he even have a future?
Or Ace starts growing anxious about the future. The upperclassmen of Heartslabyul notices and is there to help quell his fears.

Ace was a liar. Or as he liked to call it, an actor. Since he was little, he liked to act as superheros or as the wonderful mage he told his brother he would become. It always made his brother laugh, saying he had good acting skills and that it was impressive how he would make up backstories and answer weird questions about his characters on the spot.
Then he started lying about everything.

"That doesn't clear much up." the piglin stated.
"Your dad gave me a map, told me that I could stay here. Is that not true?" Ranboo seemed disappointed, in the bone-deep way that came with working towards something only to be told 'no'.
Technoblade was annoyed about the fact that his house was volunteered without him even being looped in on the matter, but at the same time-
This was just a kid. A hybrid kid who couldn't of had anywhere else to go.
"Let's get you fed, and we'll talk about it."

Just when Technoblade finally adjusts to his new life, a hybrid kid he's never seen before appears on his doorstep claiming to have been sent there by his father.
Technoblade wasn't a charity, and he wasn't a dad either. But this was a kid who had nowhere else to go and not nearly enough resources to survive on his own.

For a moment, the kid just stared at him, his chest rising and falling in silent panic.
“It’s okay,” Technoblade said, raising his bloodstained hands. “I’m not gonna hurt you.”
The kid tried to scramble back, but he staggered halfway through his movement. His face was a mess of blood; Technoblade wasn’t sure how much of it belonged to him. “Don’t come any closer!”
“Hey,” Technoblade said, lowering himself to one knee in what he hoped was a disarming move. “It’s okay, kid. Just calm down.”
“How—” The kid coughed, his bloodstained hand rising to clutch at his chest. “Who—”
“My name is Technoblade.” He kept his voice even and his tone calm. “I’m not gonna hurt you.”
The kid’s eyes darted to the bodies. “You killed them.”
Slowly, with his every movement projected, Technoblade shouldered his axe. “Yep.”
Or, Technoblade picks up a child in the wastelands of the apocalypse. He and Ranboo have got a long journey ahead of them, but it's not one they have to make alone.

Oh, fuck him. Also, no, not really. “Well, excuse me for underestimating what you sinners are capable of. None of you have ever managed to hurt me before in all the millennia you’ve tried. I’m not used to ambushes meaning anything.”
“Hence, folly.” Red tilts his head to the side at an inhuman angle, canned laughter swelling in the background. “You’re so good at it!”
