Summary
You know every interaction the two of you engage in is some sort of carefully constructed ritual of gaining superiority over the other; that’s not what confuses you. He pretends to not understand your inherently correct view of the world, where those who serve hold the real power behind the throne. Without a master, the servant remains; without a servant, the master is helpless. Being relied on is proof that you’re better than those who rely on you. Yet, when you express that here, he shows he knows. He’s an obedient thing, and that means he’s doing your job for you.
It’s beautifully infuriating. Your loathsome copy cannot be anywhere near your equal, but he’s cunning enough to make an entertaining foe. Oh, if only your game of cat and mouse could go on forever! That would be true bliss, but eventually a winner must emerge, even if their days afterwards would only be that of miserable longing. A murder can’t be done in half measures.
You’ve got plenty of time to play with your prey until then, though.

Summary
Three years ago, there was an unsuccessful coup on Dreamland’s monarchy. The only thing keeping Meta Knight from execution was his usefulness, and perhaps the tears of the star-child himself. In those years he remained King Dedede's knight for the purposes of protecting Dreamland and preserving his life, though he was forced to stay in the castle walls and obey Dedede's every order. It was miserable—for both of them.
And surely things would have stayed that way, were it not for the crashing of an alien ship and the interruption of a picnic neither of them had wanted to attend.
OR
Dedede and Meta Knight learn not to hate each other via the common goal of hating Magolor and wanting to protect their respective children.
