Summary

Hermione Granger, now in charge of the Deradicalisation and Reintegration department of the Ministry, discovers something she shouldn't have. Malfoy was never tried, never convicted and does not seem to exist on record.
Tasked with facilitating the rehabilitation of someone who hates her back into society at the expense of her own personal life falling apart, it quickly becomes clear to Hermione that someone had never intended for him to escape.
A tale of two deeply flawed, deeply sad individuals and the pain that binds them together. This is not a happy story.

Lightly inspired by the 1989 film The War of the Roses, (but without the animal death,) and our own recent pandemic.
She was wearing one of her neat, buttoned-up outfits as always; brown herringbone trousers and a silky cream blouse that covered her from throat to wrist, her hair braided around her head but not quite as neat as usual. He stopped several feet from her and frowned. “Why do you smell of smoke, Granger?”
“Does it really matter, Malfoy?” She skewered him with a glare, arms folding across her chest. “Perhaps I took up smoking.”
“And did you?”
She gave him an ‘are you mad?’ look. “No, I burnt down my office,” she said exasperatedly, as if it should’ve been obvious, and he tried to refrain from giving her an ‘are you mad?’ look in return.

Of his father’s bravery, and how our enemies cursed him and made him sick. I tell him the story of how hard he fought to live his truncated life with unbridled humor and joy. How he gave his love openly and freely, in spite of his horrible childhood. How his best friend loved him so much he did the unthinkable. How he not only gave me his friendship and love, but gave me a son, who is just as wonderful as he was.”
