And when the thing spat him out, he had been stuck somewhere in between for a very long time. It wasn't in his skin, then, but he wasn't in it, either. He was in between. For hours? For months? For years? He had no idea.
Cramming his arms under him and wincing at the sting of ice beneath his palms— warm palms, living palms, palms attached to wrists that thrummed with the pulse of a striking heart— he slowly pushed himself up to look at his surroundings.
__________When the Distortion moves from Michael to Helen, Michael is spat back out somewhere in the middle of London, stuck figuring out where to go and how to live again.

That was another reason she wanted it out , Michael Shelley had been an archival assistant and no matter how much It Is Not What It Is had surrounded and torn at him and what remained of him that fact had not changed.

Michael Shelley gets his identity back once it is no longer in use by the Distortion. He is then promptly dumped on Jon and his assistants who really aren't entirely sure what to do with an uninformed assistant who has been presumed dead for about eight years.
In America, Gerard Keay is not dead. After the Catalouge of the Trapped Dead was aquired by Trevor and Julia they attempted to destroy it together with a number of other artefacts of varied origin. Turns out, setting multiple magical objects from multiple different fear powers on fire has a number of side-effects, including, but not limited to, bringing one of The Catalouge's inhabitants back from the dead.

Summary
When Lanyon is inflicted with a curse that will kill the person he loves most, he finds himself in a race against the clock to save Jekyll's life. In an act of desperation, he turns to the person he hates the most to trick the curse into believing he is in love with them instead while they search for a cure together.
If they die then all he loses is his worst enemy, if they find a cure then all's well that ends well. All he has to do to pull it off is trick the entire society into believing he is in love with Edward Hyde.
It should have been that simple, if it wasn't for the fact that Lanyon is Lanyon and Hyde is so very, awfully, Hyde.
If one thing is for certain, it's that the society won't survive the two of them combined.
