And Eddie?” Athena stopped just as she got to the door and turned him with a serious expression on her face. “There’s a witness.”
Her frown dipped under the professional mask she was known for and Eddie caught the flicker of concern pulling at her composure.
“You know him?”
Athena pressed her lips into a tight line and nodded.
“Evan Buckley. He’s the bartender here. He was helping Charlie restock tonight when he heard a noise and saw it happen.”
Homicide Detective, Eddie Diaz, is called in to investigate the murder of a local shield and ladder bar owner. There he meets his only witness, Evan "Buck" Buckley.

Summary
They both melt into it, each of them dead on their feet from work, from the emotions they’ve been forced to face. Buck knows at this moment that he would be able to get through anything if everything ended being engulfed in Eddie’s arms. He wants to linger, wants to press his face further into Eddie’s neck, kiss the still slightly shower damp skin until it’s red, hold onto Eddie until he doesn’t feel so broken anymore.
But he knows he has to pull away.
“I tried to love her,” Eddie says softly, his breath ghosting against Buck’s cheek as they part.
“You can’t help who you love,” Buck replies. He reaches up to hold Eddie’s face in his palm, hoping the motion doesn’t give away the truth to his words. Buck could easily be talking to himself, reassuring himself that it’s okay to be in love with Eddie because he’s there for him in whatever way he needs when it matters most.
Eddie leans into the touch for a moment, closing his eyes and taking a deep breath to compose himself. Then he’s pushing Buck’s hand away like it was never there in the first place.
Or, Buck and Eddie have some revelations about their definitions of home, reachability of dreams, and a future spent together.

Does anyone else's partner hate pet names?
He gave me that impression very early on, so I call him by his first name but he doesn’t seem to respond well to that either. Maybe he’s just not used to hearing it? He usually goes by a nickname at work and he doesn’t see his parents that often. Not really looking for advice, just haven’t experienced this before. Especially because his coworker seems to call him whatever he wants and he never seems to mind.Series
