Summary
Hawkins sucks. It really, really sucks, Max decides right away. She can walk to the arcade at least, but just as she’d suspected, there are no busy places to steal wallets and the stores are all run by people who know everybody and pay attention. She can shoplift a few things, little things, but not nearly enough to earn her keep. After a week, she’s starting to get nervous. Mom and Billy can still do their jobs out here, at the truck stop right outside of town, and Max is scared she’ll have to start doing that job soon.
Mom and Billy come home from work with injuries all the time. Billy is usually limping, and there’s always blood in his underwear, Max knows because she does the laundry. She doesn’t want to do what they do.
Or, Joyce clocks that there's something wrong about the Hargrove family almost as soon as they move to town, but she has no idea just how bad it is until Hopper has reason to investigate.

Max used to pray he’d crash that stupid Camaro. He drove too fast, didn’t pay attention to the road. It was only on the worst nights that she really wanted him dead, but she often found herself hoping he’d wreck his beloved car, maybe break his leg. She never wanted this, never really wanted him dead no matter what she thought, certainly didn’t want- this.
