TMNTtober 2023 Day 11: Stories.
When did Mikey become such a damn pushover?
Well, probably the moment he realised that they're doomed. Seeing Leo show up here tonight, devastated and without hope, has shocked it into him anew. Damn, he used to be good at this. Used to know the exact joke to crack - and even if it didn't land, a groan or retort was better than silence or indifference.
He doesn't know how to comfort his brother anymore.
“You could tell me anything. You know that, right?” Mikey tilts his head to glance at Leo, who at least has the decency to look embarrassed for breaking the thread. “You could tell me what's going on in your life. Mundane stuff like what you had for breakfast. Heck, tell me a fart joke!”
Leo cracks a smile at that and shakes his head. Voice softening, Mikey utters, “Shell, you could have just sent me a note saying, ‘Hi Mikey, I'm not dead.’ That would have worked just fine.”Series

“You’re trying to make gloves that would fit us? Our hands?” Donnie asks, leaning a little closer. The ball of yarn squishes slightly. It’s not too warm in the kitchen, nor too bright. Life is very, very good.
“Bingo,” Raph says, pointing his way with one of those needles. “Operative word bein’ trying. Shit’s not working with me all that well, and if it keeps not working then it’s going on a one way trip down the garbage disposal, you hear me?”
This last bit is said to the ball of yarn. It’s not particularly effective, in no small part because it’s an empty threat; that shit, as Donnie has been informed several times over, is expensive.

Leo sluggishly pulls out his phone, shaky finger hovering over Mikey’s name. He could just… not call anyone at all. He’s freezing now, teeth chattering noisily, but somewhere in his chest he feels a warmth slowly blooming, a type of looseness in his muscles he hasn’t felt in a long, long time.
It’s not that he wants to die. Sometimes he just thinks it would be easier to stop living.

Donnie hiccups a sob, his big brown eyes wobble and gloss over, more tears to be shed.
“You gotta fix it, Leo!” Raph is demanding with as much force as he can through his own tears and the lisp he’s yet to shake.
He’s pushing past Don’s good side to get to him, looking at him like he holds the answers in the world because he’s just seven years old still and believes that big brothers were full of magic like that. Leo doesn’t want to be the one to break the spell but he doesn’t think he can fix this one this time.
He rubs Raph’s shoulder slowly, in a way that he knows will help balm all his burning emotions that bubble up inside of him, nowhere to escape except in a place that becomes explosive and loud and angry because Raph hurts just as much as Donnie’s busted arm some days.

Ms Katri had told him once with a lot of conviction that most older people carry, that he was a frightfully handsome young man. Leo used to say it all the time too when they were little, tracing his fingers over the lighter patches of his skin over the bridge of his nose, telling him that each one was a kiss from an angel, because that was where he’d come from.
He wasn’t spat from his mother’s womb on a cold, dirtied kitchen floor. He wasn’t a child unloved and unwanted by a woman that bore the same sickness he’d inherited from her all these years later.
To Leo and to his brothers, his existence was still, somehow, supposedly a blessing.
His cheeks are drawn in and hollow, his eyes empty and dark. His hair is limp and untended to and looking past the bruises that still wrap around his skull and the red raised line that cuts through his bottom lip, looking back at the boy in the reflection, he can spot a thousand wounds and scars that he’s already had to carry in just nineteen, short, dreadful years.
It doesn’t feel like much of a blessing. It feels very much like a curse.
