Summary
Sisko picked up a PADD and visibly hesitated. “Normally I would ask Dr. Bashir for this, but…”
“I understand, captain.”
“We could compensate you for your help, of course. If you can decode it.”
“I’ll see what I can do.”
Sisko looked a little suspicious, but nodded and handed Elim the PADD. Elim looked at the message and blinked.
It was an Obsidian Order code. An older one - one from around the time Elim was born, if he was reading this correctly.

"Don't tell me you forgot what day you hatched on? I remember it like it was yesterday... you made such a mess. You had bits of shell stuck to you for days and wouldn't let anyone clean it off..."
"I'm thirty," Elim mumbled in realization. He had forgotten all about it thanks to recent events unfolding in ways that occupied him in more ways than one.

Summary
"His name is Silaran Prin," Ziyal said to Nerys as they materialized on the runabout. "He lives near the Demilitarized Zone."
Nerys nodded and stepped towards the weapons locker, then paused and turned to place her hand on Ziyal's shoulder. "I owe you for this, Ziyal, more than you could ever imagine. Let me get you back onto the station before anyone notices—"
"You shouldn't go by yourself, Nerys."
"This isn't your fight."
"What if Father alerted Prin about my inquiries? You'll be safer with me there, I'm sure."
Groaning, Nerys grabbed two phasers from the locker and handed her one. "And here I thought Elim was a bad influence on you— now look at me!"
"I am," Ziyal said, then checked the charge of her phaser.

Summary
“Well, I do wish good health for the captain of this station,” Elim said disinterestedly and stepped back into the dressing room, clothes in his arms. “Regardless of whether or not it gets you back to work.”
“I would like to go back to work,” Bashir sighed while Elim held up a jacket in front of him, considering his shoulder width.
“I know, Doctor.”
“I feel like a burden right now. I know that these people are my friends, but they still feel like strangers to me, and I don’t like relying on strangers - I’m sure of that.”
“You’re not a burden, Doctor. Now, put this on.”

Summary
Sisko’s hands were folded, fingers interlaced, on the desktop. Elim was aware that Sisko had a habit of fiddling with that baseball of his when he was preoccupied or agitated, but it sat motionless on its stand.
“Is there something… going on, captain?” Elim said when it became apparent that Sisko was - somehow - reluctant to start speaking.
Sisko exhaled. “There has been an accident involving Dr. Bashir."
Elim blinked, processing this. "I see," he said at length, fingers kneading at the fabric of his pants. "What happened?"
"You don't seem surprised, Mr. Garak."

Summary
Time passed slowly, and he eventually settled on the couch as he waited, idly listening in to the O'Brien's familial banter, scrolling his PADD in relative boredom and the hope that Bashir would at least send an explanation if he couldn't make it to dinner after all.
Suddenly Professor O'Brien appeared next to him, leaning on the armrest. "Don't worry, Elim. There's still some time left until his shift ends," she said knowingly and gave him an encouraging smile. "Did I ever tell you how Miles was late to our first proper date?"
"No..." Elim said tentatively, too nosy to not have his curiosity piqued by the promise of such an anecdote.
"I wasn't late on purpose!" Chief O'Brien declared loudly from the kitchen. "There was a transporter accident and I had to seperate Ensign Shoemaker from the wall of the transporter room without causing damage to the ship! Or her!"
Professor O'Brien giggled loudly and nudged Elim's shoulder. "And that's what you get for falling in love with a Starfleet officer."

Summary
When Elim woke up, the first conclusion he could draw based on what was going on around him was that the last four years had been a very vivid dream. It was dark, hot, and humid, it smelled like uridium and Bajoran sweat, and someone was kicking him in the ribs.
“Look at you,” growled a fat and ugly Bajoran man who was looking down at Elim with nothing but contempt. “No wonder the Cardassians think we’re animals. Get up! Get up!”
Elim sprang to his feet, very disoriented, and realized that the Bajoran had moved on to terrorizing Odo of all people — getting his bearings again, or as much of them as he could, Elim noticed that Dax and Sisko were also here, slower to get up than himself. Odo in particular was struggling.
So, not a dream. Something very strange was going on.

Summary
“What’s up, Julian?” Dax said.
“It’s about the trip to Risa… Nurse Kabo had a family emergency and has to go back to Bolarus for a bit, so now our shift schedule is all messed up. I’m afraid I’ll have to back out.”
“Aw, that’s too bad,” Leeta said sympathetically. “I thought Elim was really looking forward to it, too.”
“Ah, well, that’s the thing,” Bashir said, clasping his hands behind his back. “I still want Elim to be able to go - he could really use some real UV light, and the climate on Risa is excellent for ectothermic species. But he’s not interested in going by himself - so I offered my spot to Ziyal, if the rest of you don’t mind her tagging along instead of me.”
Dax and Leeta exchanged glances. “Sure,” Dax said.
“I don’t see the problem,” Leeta said.
“I do not think that Ziyal’s father would be very happy if he knew,” Worf said bluntly.

Summary
"Me?" Elim asked incredulously. "I didn't do anything!"
"That's precisely it. Usually I stop by your shop because, well, you have an unfortunate tendency to attract a variety of trouble, but..."
"But?!"
"With you having settled down a little and regularly attending counseling and taking your medication, there's really not much of a security risk anymore. You're much more... docile now."
Elim put down his fork and glared.
"...did I say something wrong?" Odo huffed.
"Yes!" Elim said a little too loudly, then crossed his arms. "I mean, no! But I'm not docile!"

Summary
Benjamin sighed deeply through his nose and put the baseball back on its stand. “Technically, the final decision on whether or not Jake could accompany Bashir to the conference was Bashir’s.”
“And it was Jake’s idea to go, wasn’t it?” Jadzia said, “I thought Julian had needed some convincing.”
“Not that much.”
“All doctors have huge egos. Even if Julian decided he didn’t want an article written about him after all, he would still know that Jake would be able to find someone at the conference to interview instead.” Jadzia paused. “I think it’s sweet that he’s willing to help out Jake like that.”
Benjamin grumbled. “I would prefer it if Bashir kept his distance.”

"Oh, what's love without danger?" Quark nettled, then seemed to remember his current predicament. "Well, Odo? Tell him!"
"I'm afraid I will have to arrest both of you until the situation can be resolved, Doctor."
To his surprise, Bashir only laughed lightly and leaned back a little. "I assumed as much. I bet you've been waiting for an opportunity like this for a long time, haven't you, Odo?"

Summary
Wait a moment. Something wasn’t right here.
Bashir had, at the moment, six uniforms hanging in his closet. Most people only owned one or two since they were easily replicated, but since Bashir always needed his pant legs and sleeves let out (and Elim always insisted on taking in the waist slightly), he was reluctant to recycle them. It was bad enough how often the uniforms got destroyed at the infirmary.
Which was why Bashir actually only owned five uniforms right now. One of these… did not belong to him.

Elim raised his head out of the water. “Don’t pretend you care, Doctor.”
“I do care. Just because you dumped me doesn’t mean that has to change.”
“How did the trial go today?” Elim asked instead of acknowledging what Bashir said.
Bashir sighed. “You know, you could just attend instead of waiving your right to face your accusers.”
“I don’t like the way the Federation handles trials. They haven’t even decided whether I’m guilty or not yet, why should I be involved?” Elim clicked his tongue. “I’ll attend when they give me my sentence.”

Summary
“Do you know what’s causing it?” Odo said through gritted teeth. (“Teeth”.)
“No,” said Bashir bluntly.
“It was after I introduced him to Ms. Chalan,” Elim supplied, “perhaps he’s simply having an unexpected reaction to a new… experience with his body?”
Odo harrumphed. Bashir stroked his beard in thought. “It’s not completely out there,” he admitted, “it could be possible that this is a normal biological process - the Changeling equivalent of puberty.”
Odo looked at him like he would actually kill him if he kept talking. Or at least he tried to. The effect was probably somewhat… ineffective.
“Or menopause,” Bashir offered.

Ziyal continued to wait at the table while Elim and Bashir headed to the replicators. Bashir was giving Elim an amused look.
“What?” he said, a little annoyed.
“I’m not sure what you think is going to happen, Elim, but even I couldn’t handle two Cardassians at once.”
“Ha ha. What is it I’ve said about your ego, Doctor?”
Bashir chuckled. “You really have nothing to worry about. Now, while we’re still in line - what’s this about Quark dying?”

Now it seemed Ziyal was finally emerging into station life, very probably at the behest of Kira, judging by the front-row seat at the springball match. Bashir could only wonder if she anticipated the particular wrinkle in this plan.
“Stop watching her,” he half-hissed to Elim.
Elim didn’t even turn to look at him. “I thought the whole point was to watch.”
“The point is to watch the game, not the spectators. Especially not that spectator.”

Summary
Together they carefully lowered the sapling into the hole Keiko had dug for it, then Bashir stepped back and let Keiko take over packing the soil around it.
“Thank you,” she said.
“No need. Elim’s the one who asked me to pick it up for him and bring it here, anyway.”
“No, I mean… not just for this, Julian.”
Bashir nodded solemnly. "I was only doing my job."
