Because, contrary to Makoto’s idealistic hope and ambition, Byakuya does not feel the same pull towards any ray of light that is supposedly there, should he only look for it. When he feels deeply about something, so much so that it makes his body shake in terror, he only finds darkness when he walks ahead. He brings his sharp weapons with him, metaphorical or not, but when he cannot see through the shadows, he cannot tell whether the blade is pointed at his attackers or himself. He does not know if, should he choose to slice through the air, he’ll hit the figure in front of him or himself. It scares him more than it should to know he is able to harm his own body, because his body is not meant to be harmed, especially by his own hands. He was once a powerful figurehead to his family, but now he was weaker than he’d ever been.
