Buck is woken up in the middle of the night. The unexpected call shatters his entire life."Hello. This is officer Marino, I am with the LAPD, am I speaking with a Mr. Evan Buckley?
In an instant Buck jolted awake.
LAPD? He glances at the time...2:33 a.m.
His chest tighten."This is him..." he was frozen.
"I am so sorry to have to inform you like this but as the emergency contact for Edmundo Diaz I have to unfortunately let you know he has been killed in a home invasion earlier this morning. As the on file legal guardian for his son...Christopher Diaz, we ask you meet the officers at his residence to take custody of his son. Again, I am so sorry to have to inform you like this.
Bucks face drained of all color. The phone fell from his hand. He forgot how to breathe, struggling with every breath. His body beginning to tremble and the tears slowly, slightly fell from his eyes.

Summary
Buck is already drowning beneath the weight of everything that led him to sue the department, and the 118's decision to shut him out becomes the final fracture in an already exhausted heart. Feeling cut off from the people he trusts most, Buck begins spiraling, isolating himself, and losing his grip on the things that once kept him grounded. He’s desperate for the team to see that he never wanted to hurt anyone, but ESPECIALLY Eddie. When Buck finally reaches his breaking point and can no longer hide how badly he’s falling apart, Eddie is forced to confront just how much his silence has cost Buck, and realizes that he can’t change what happened, but he can still catch Buck when he falls, make amends, and remind him that this moment is not the end of his story.

Buck’s breath caught — not from pain, but from the shock of hearing it.

The words sounded shaky even to him.
He braced one hand against the counter and stared at the metal protruding from his side.
Any paramedic, any firefighter, anyone with basic first-aid training knew what he was supposed to do.
Leave it alone.
Go to a hospital.
Call for help.
But for Buck this wasn’t an option.
OR
Buck gets hurt on a call but can’t ask for help because the lawsuit is just over and no one cares. Or do they? He performs self surgery.

Now, he could wake up beside the man he loved, listen to Christopher grumble about Math, find Theo asleep with a pencil clutched in his little fist, colours impossibly smattered and smudged across his cheek, and believe—just for a little while—that perhaps the universe had finally run out of ways to surprise him.
Which is, of course, why it happened again. The unexpected drop of the other shoe. Tilting his world on its axis.

“Eddie, do you not like ice cream?” Theo asked softly, twisting his head and staring up at Eddie as Buck spoke to the server behind the counter.
“Oh I love ice cream, Theo, but guess what?” Eddie said softly, crouching down to meet Theo’s gaze and smiling gently.
“What?” Theo asked sincerely, a wide-eyed expression of curiosity taking over his entire face.
“Well, you see, I can’t have any ice cream right now” Eddie whispered, pouting dramatically.
“Why not!?” Theo cried out.
“Because I haven’t had my vegetables yet, and everyone knows that you have to eat your vegetables first” Eddie said, nodding exaggeratedly.
OR
Eddie joins Buck and Theo for ice cream after finding them at the hospital, Eddie is worried about Buck and tries to help him navigate parenting Theo. Buck emotionally withdraws from Eddie, there's some miscommunication and a little bit of angst along the way, but all Eddie wants to do is help!!!

Despite the fact that he keeps hitting his palm against it, his phone screen remains black.

He just said “I love you” to Eddie, and his phone immediately died. So he can’t even text a follow-up like “haha i just meant bc i’m so grateful for you lol love you bro.” Or something less cringey. Maybe.
Doesn’t matter, though. Because his phone is dead. So now Eddie thinks Buck loves him.
or; There's a power outage, and Buck's phone dies at the worst time, despite his efforts to find a power bank. Turns out, the timing might have actually been perfect.

"No!" Eddie screams, sounding like the word was ripped from his throat, like he's the one who just got shot. There's a beat or two before Buck understands why.
On his side, a patch of dark red is slowly spreading across the blue of his uniform. He's looking down at it for a few seconds, like he doesn't understand what it is. And then the pain hits Buck, white hot and icy cold all at once, and his eyes roll into the back of his head as he crumples to the ground.
