At the mall he’d said it, ‘I don’t know what the fuck is wrong with you Randy, but you’re never gonna figure it out if she keeps dragging you around by your dick.’ A gross oversimplification maybe, but it got to the point well enough. Like a dagger slipping straight through Randy’s bruised ribcage and burying itself painfully in his heart.

“For us.” Randy nods, his heart in his throat. He doesn’t think he’s ever felt the wind so keenly against his skin, doesn’t think the wet pavement has ever smelled so sweet, doesn’t think Benson’s eyes have ever been so blue. Everything feels electric, like the air before a thunderstorm. “I know. I don’t care. I don’t want to stay in this town any longer, anyway.”
“You mean it?”
“Yeah.” He’s never meant anything before, he thinks. He means this.
Benson starts to smile, then, wild and sharp. “Alright. Let’s get out of here.”
