“Hangin’ in there, pretty boy?” Billy rasps, his voice wrecked from the screams and sobs they’ve only just heard. “Took care of that pest problem for ya.”

Summary
Despite being a prisoner, Billy might be more at peace than he's ever been. In Kamchatka, everything is predictable — he doesn't have to constantly be aware of his captors' moods, doesn't have to walk on his toes to keep quiet, doesn't have to tense and plant his feet every time someone moves towards him. It makes him guilty, if he thinks about it too hard. He's a prisoner, but he almost doesn't feel like one, not when he's sleeping and eating better than he has in years.

Except he desperately needs something to distract him. “Like distant future, or…?”
“A year and a half,” she says. “Maybe more.”
“Damn,” he whistles. “Future any good?”
“No," she says. "Everyone dies.”
“Sounds rough.”
“Yes,” the girl agrees.
Doesn’t seem to be much of a talker, huh?

He looks down at the blood on his hands and on the floor and wonders why the memory hasn’t broken yet, why he isn’t back in Starcourt mall with control of his body again, wonders if he's even still alive at all. Is this hell then? Or perhaps purgatory? It certainly isn’t heaven, that’s for sure. None of this makes any sense…but then what's new—nothing in Billy’s life makes sense anymore.
Billy laughs then, loud and long and unhinged. It's the only sound in the whole house, and it bounces off the walls like a fucked up echo, like the world is laughing with him.
“Jesus christ you’re insane…” It’s Max’s voice and it’s shaking. It only makes Billy laugh harder, because Max has it all wrong. Billy isn’t crazy, it’s the rest of the world that’s insane.

Billy dies a hero of sorts. He wakes up back in his bed on Saturday morning, the third of November, 1984...nearly nine months earlier.

Steve's voice came out weak when he looked at Nancy. Did he hear her right? There was no way she had just said that to him. The words 'I don't love you' and 'bullshit' echoed through Steve's mind. Maybe he just misunderstood her. But judging from the annoyed and drunken look on her face she was dead serious. Ouch. He felt like he just got stabbed in the heart.
