  2. Summary

There's a subgenre in the Bible known as apocalyptic literature because it's about the end of the world. It's not all doom and gloom like you might think, though! These stories are always written during a time when its audience is going through some sort of persecution or suffering, and the point is to offer hope in times of trial. The end of the world isn't supposed to be the destruction of all things good. It's supposed to be the coming of justice for the wronged—yet there is also a place reserved for mercy. This is the hope I have when I face trials, and it's the hope I work to capture in these stories.

So here's my collection of weird apocalyptic tales. Not all of them are literally about the apocalypse, but they all fit my theme.

  5. Summary

To the North, the End cities stand tall and frozen and dead, ancient remnants of legend--if they exist at all. To the South, the once-great city of L'Manberg burns and withers away into ash like its neighbors, crushed underfoot as cruel men make war to rule over its corpse. In the ashes of what once was, how can one begin again? What hope is there when it feels like the world is ending?

They say that deep in the depths of the earth, giants called Endermen sleep, waiting patiently for this world to reach its End. Maybe that's for the best.

    Summary

"Link, we don't know the half of what you can do or why you can do it. Normally, S.H.I.E.L.D. doesn't like that. But, what intelligence we do have on you suggests you care about people. We have a potentially world-ending threat on our hands. Please, we can't fight Loki. He's out of our league. That's your specialty."

    Or

This is book one of a retelling of the MCU with one major change: Link is reborn into the world to become a hero in a world quickly starting to fill with heroes. He must find a way to balance the events happening all around him (Loki, The Avengers, Ultron, even Thanos) with his personal mission: stop Ganon from destroying and remaking the world. New friendships form, old ones are rekindled, danger and darkness threatens the world from more angles than thought possible. And through it all, the question on everyone's mind: what makes someone a hero?

    Bookmarker's Notes

I don't dip into these fandoms much, but I found this story quite enjoyable. The choice of detail is interesting, and the concept intrigues me. I'm curious to see how these two very different worlds are knit together and what that does to their concept of what heroes should be.

    Summary

    “There’s been a break-in in a warehouse on the southside of L’Manberg.”
    “Just a break-in?” Tommy whined.
    “It’s better than nothing.”
“Fine. Send the address,” Tommy said. A few seconds later, there was a buzzing from his watch and the screen lit up with a new location. “Got it.” He got to his feet and pulled the goggles from his forehead and over his eyes. “It’s time to go fast.”
“You need a better catchphrase, man,” Tubbo said through the earpiece.
“Why? I quite like this one.”
“It’s somehow dumber than your superhero name.”
“Fast is a great name,” Tommy said. And with that, he ran.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Don't know enough to give a detailed commentary yet, but I always enjoy KoE's characterizations, especially her dialogue.
The biggest point of interest for me right now is that unlike a lot of superhero AUs, this one doesn't have any sort of hero corporation, and heroes are publicly considered vigilantes. It cuts through a common trope in this genre, and I think that will lead to something interesting.

    Summary

Wilbur was still half awake. He sat on the roof of the camarvan, a drink still in hand and a half-smoked cigarette glowing against the sky, which was just beginning to show the pale pink signs of morning. He sang quietly under his breath, a smile on his face.

I heard there was a special place
Where men could go and emancipate
From the brutality and the tyranny of their rulers
Well this place is real, you needn’t fret
With Wilbur, Tommy, Tubbo, not Eret
It’s a very real and not blown up L’Manberg
    My L’Manberg
    My L’Manberg
    My L’Manberg
    My L’Manberg

He sang the words to a familiar tune: a stolen tune. No one here knew that but him. How could they? Still, he enjoyed singing the anthem again and again, basking in the words and the light of the sunrise as the horizon was filled with a tapestry of pinks and oranges. L’Manberg’s sunrise. His sunrise.

    Summary

Smack! A snowball collided with the side of Wilbur’s head.

“Hey, Wil-bur!” Tommy shouted, barreling forth with another snowball. It flew past Wilbur, who nearly fell to avoid it. “Bitch,” Tommy mumbled.

“What do you want, gremlin?” Wilbur pressed, mildly amused.

    “I want you to stay!”

    “No. We’ve been over this—”

Tommy’s third throw powdered into Wilbur’s face.

    ~or~

    Wilbur is revived.

Except whenever he sleeps, Ghostbur takes over and brings him back to the Arctic, where Philza lives. And every time Wilbur wakes up, he runs away, off to repeat the same mistakes that had once driven him insane.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Alivebur and Ghostbur have a disagreement over what they should be doing with their life, which results in stacks of letters and their shared body running back and forth from Phil's house to Pogtopia. Hopefully one of these days, Wilbur will come to his senses and appreciate what's in front of him instead of getting stuck in the past. If not, I suppose Wilbur will at least get a lot of exercise.

The descriptions in this story are lovely and full of character. I think my favorite little lore detail is that the blue actually wells up from Ghostbur's hands, so even when he's not present, we can see where he's been and what he's been doing because he leaves blue fingerprints everywhere. It's adorable.

    Summary

Many considered such travels as nothing more than a game, travelling world to world without care of what they abandoned in their wake. But for him––for him, this was real. This was the only way to truly live: with consequences hanging over him for every action, every choice, and every mistake.

    Bookmarker's Notes

So someone's writing the thematic flipside of my story Out of Sight, Out of Mind, using the universe I built for that story. It's set before Dream builds his server and explores Philza and his decidedly different approach to life.

This isn't just an average SBI story. There's a lot more going on that's decidedly more ominous as the story proceeds.

The author really does a good job of building on the lore I've created with the strange differences between worlds and servers and how that affects people in huge ways. It's super cool to see the story from another POV other than DreamSMP, who's decidedly biased.
