Someone in the comments (literallyafish) likened the ending of this to "missing the last step on the stairs in the dark" and honesty I don't think there is a better way to describe this.
Again the writing is fantastic. Everything feels so wrong, but you just can't put your finger on why. Everything is so so so subtle. It feels like I'm the one losing my mind.
I hate everything about this. 10/10 would never read it again.

This entire fic is poetry, in and out.
The use of blackout text is so clever, and how you need to highlight them in order to get the full picture because some sentences tell a whole other story when you chose not to.
And the fact that more and more of the story becomes unreadable as you go on right to the massive wall of blackout text... I was honestly scared to even highlight it, to read it. I didn't at first. It's genuinely insane.
Fascinating read, wonderful writing. The constant use of parallels/metaphors. The prose, how every emotion is described.
Felt absolute disgust reading this and I mean it in the best way possible. I love everything about this. -

I honestly love this fic.
This whole thing reads like a a fairytale, the kind you'd find rampaging through your grandparents books as a kid. The kind you'd watch on tv with the rest of the Disney classics. The kind that makes you wonder, filling you with awe and hope.
It's such a beautiful mix of the good old Arthurian legends and the Merlin series, that I find myself wanting more.While the fic itself may be about magic in all it's shapes, the writing is magical on its own. It made me want to be a kid again and I love that.
It's nostalgic. That's the best compliment I could give it.

“I lost him,” Merlin says quietly, and bows his head as the tears prickle annoyingly at his lashes. One of them drops into his stew; it ripples for a moment, and he stares at the dish. He isn’t hungry, really.
“He would have wanted for you to be happy,” Gaius says, his voice kind and low. Merlin feels as though he’s a wounded animal, hiding away in the corner and shying away from all hands that want to help him—he can’t be helped. Lancelot was his friend, and Merlin couldn’t lose him, but he did.
Or: Lancelot walks through the veil and towards his death. So everyone thinks, at least, until Merlin finds him trapped in the world between life and death. And there's very little Merlin won't do to get him back.
