Summary
To humanity’s credit, being a guardian angel is a lot less of a demanding occupation than it used to be. The modern era means that Taehyun does a lot less fending off tigers or the bubonic plague and instead spends his time protecting Soobin from much smaller things, like coffee burns or tripping over the sidewalk.
Soobin is riding the train home when someone takes the seat right next to him. It’s kind of weird, seeing as the car they’re in is almost empty. Taehyun, sitting on his other side, eyes the man warily. There’s something off about him. Taehyun can’t tell what it is. He’s perfectly normal-looking, if not ridiculously handsome. He’s wearing sunglasses, too, Taehyun notices.
The man lowers his sunglasses and winks. His eyes are an unmistakable ruby red.
A devil.

Summary
It was quieter than Beomgyu thought it would be, at the end of the world.
He hadn’t had much reason to picture it, at least Before. That was what he’d started calling it, in his head – Before and After. The memories of Before were getting farther, fainter, while the memories of After multiplied between his fingers like grains of sand, spilling out and over and threatening to bury his shoes beneath their weight.
He didn’t know what he would do after Taehyun.

“For what it’s worth, I think you can do it,” Taehyun said. “I think you can get into any school you want, and then you can get a job you don’t hate.”
“I don’t hate my job. I just hate that I’m doing it with my parents watching on the cameras. It feels like school is the only place I don’t have them breathing down my neck all the time.”
“Then you should try!” Taehyun insisted. “Study as hard as you can, get in somewhere good, and never look back.” There was a pause. “We could go to the same school.”
Beomgyu actually started to laugh at that, and Taehyun looked slightly offended. “Hey! What are you laughing at me for!?”
“I’m not laughing at you, I’m laughing at the idea that I could get nearly as good of scores as you. That’s delusional.”
“I told you, I think you can do it. You just have to apply yourself.”
“Life’s about more than just applying yourself, Taehyun,” Beomgyu said, laying down on the grass and staring at the purpling sky. “Sometimes you’re dealt the hand that you’re dealt, and you have to choose how to play from there. Not everyone is born with as many choices as you.”

“Are you going to tell me why you broke into my house, or are they just going to find my body two days from now when I don’t show up to work?” Beomgyu asked.
“Well, I wasn’t planning on killing you,” the man in black replied. “Although that can certainly be arranged, if that’s what you want.”
Beomgyu thought about it for a second. “Actually, that’s okay too. Just do it fast.”
“Dude.” The man raised his eyebrow. “Are you good?”
“Not really,” Beomgyu said. “I’m a broke college student working a part-time job at a department store where everyone treats me like shit, living in the worst one-bedroom in the world.”
“Now that you mention it, this apartment is awful. You live like this?”

Welcome to The Midway, the pamphlet says. Beomgyu tries to read it, but he can’t get his brain to concentrate when there’s a hot guy in front of him. “What’s The Midway?” He asks.
“The halfway point between life and death,” Taehyun answers monotonously. “Also known as Pity Purgatory.”
“Pity Purgatory?”
“Yes.” Taehyun looks away from his computer for a moment to stare Beomgyu in the eyes. “You’re here because you died a premature death that was… undignified.”
“You mean I died because of something stupid.”

“Uh… yeah," Yeonjun replies. "Did you cheat on someone?”
“No!” The guy exclaims. “That’s what I can’t figure out! I haven’t even dated someone in–“ The guy cuts himself off, face turning red. “Anyway. It’s been a while, and there’s no way I’ve been cheating on anybody. I was driving around with this on my windshield all weekend and had no idea!”
He points. On the back windshield of his car, in very familiar spray painted handwriting, are the words I am a cheating asshole.
Oh God. Oh God. Yeonjun fucked up. Yeonjun is quite possibly the worst person on the entire planet.

In hindsight, Taehyun should’ve known it would all go wrong that day. It was a Thursday, which wasn’t inherently suspicious, but his bus was late that day– his bus was never late. He’d timed his commute perfectly so that he arrived three minutes before the train pulled out of the station, so he was late to school that day– Taehyun was never late.
He was fourteen pages into Pride and Prejudice for his advanced English class when he heard a rustle in the branches. He looked up; a pair of bulging eyes stared back. Taehyun started slightly, and what appeared to be a deformed head peeked around the trunk of the tree several feet above him. The creature had lumpy, blueish skin, the color of a day-old bruise, and spindly limbs like a frog’s that supported a squishy, round body. It squawked at him through a long, wide mouth with disturbingly human-like teeth, and Taehyun gulped.It’s nothing, he thought to himself. There’s nothing there.

A loud snap pierces the air and Taehyun yelps, terrified as he stares at the broken guitar strings.

Taehyun is a normal person.
He is calm, cool, and collected on a daily basis that his friends have to extract a reaction out of him to check if he can, in fact, react to an extreme extent – e.g. tickle him, throw him in a haunted house – but the latter can cause more injuries, Kai can attest to that. So you can say he is a pretty chill guy, and you’ll just have to press certain buttons to tick him off just like any other normal person.
Taehyun can be an overthinker at times, but fortunately, he is awfully self-aware of said overthinking tendencies that can come across as helpful for others when it comes to analyzing situations. However, for this particular instance, he is not overthinking and he is definitely not overreacting.
The Beomgyu beside him is not the Beomgyu that he knows.

He’s going to have to be more specific. Memories have never been Taehyun’s strong suit.
Time has never been something he pays attention to, the days blur together and his memories of them fade too constantly. Being immortal to him just means he can’t die, not that he lives eternally. He doesn’t remember most of his life. He hardly counts that as living.
Or (a taegyu jack frost au) where winter personified Taehyun is content with living through his immortality until he meets snow-loving human Beomgyu along the way. Again, apparently.
