Summary
“Ok,” Merlin says before he can talk himself out of it, and suddenly they are signing up for the two week introduction to Italian cookery course. Their elbows knock as they fill out the sheets, and Merlin hides his pleased smile.
When someone tries to take Arthur’s spot the first lesson, Merlin politely tells them he’s saving it for a friend if they don’t mind, thank you very much.

Summary
It was something that crept up on him. Arthur had long suspected Merlin’s feelings for him were not entirely platonic. He didn’t think Merlin would ever act on it—let alone that his own feelings might change.
But when Arthur is the one to act, when he kisses Merlin--without thought or plan on either end--it feels as natural and inevitable as when Arthur had first kissed Gwen. It would have been a beautiful moment, if not for the fact that they were both immediately consumed by guilt and horror at the line Arthur has crossed.
It takes Arthur a whole day to work up the courage to tell Gwen, panicked by his attraction to more than just women. He expects her to be upset. To cry. Perhaps to throw things at him. He’d deserve it.
Instead, she just smiles. "Well," she says. "That was a long time coming, wasn't it?"
OR
If a Merthur kiss had indeed happened in Season 5. You can't convince me Gwen didn't see this coming a mile away, but bi and demi Arthur is having a confusing day. He has mistakes he must now mend, both with Gwen and with Merlin. For Mergwenthur Week "Free Day"- Language:

At his coronation, Arthur receives a great many gifts; however, one in particular stands out as Arthur learns it has the ability to transport him 1,500 years into the future while he sleeps.
With the mounting pressure that comes with ruling a kingdom, Arthur slowly finds himself preferring this dream-world where it seems that everything he's ever wanted is true. His mother and father alive, Morgana her old self, his friends together, and Merlin properly at his side. As Camelot begins collapsing around Arthur as he sleeps, he's faced with a choice: to remain in the world of dreams or return to his real life and destiny. Merlin only hopes that he can convince Arthur to stay in the real world before it's too late.

Death is one thing, being tethered to Arthur in said death is another. Merlin obviously has unifinished business, if him still being here is any indication, the only problem is that he isn't sure exactly what it is.
Arthur lives life with the barest grasp on things - forced to act to the whims of his father, he isn't sure he even knows who he is anymore. It would be a shame if a snarky ghost were to follow him around and make him reevaluate everything he's ever thought true.

She looked around the table, looking for signs of incomprehension. Leon was listening attentively, looking like a person who really, really wanted to understand and believed if he’d only listen hard enough, he’d have a better chance of a success. Percy scratched his chin thoughtfully, but judging by his eyes, he was already lost. Gwen was nodding along, as if listening about dying-but-not-really during dinner was nothing out of the ordinary, and really, after all they’ve been through over the years, it really, really wasn’t.
“And then, the knight in shining armor came and freed me from my prison” she smiled at Arthur, eyes sparkling with mischief, and he was once again shocked at how she could joke and laugh with him, considering… considering.

Summary
According to Uther Pendragon, there's only one way to rule a kingdom, and that's by keeping your subjects in line with harsh punishments and an atmosphere of fear.
Arthur isn't entirely sure that's true, but without a counter-example, the prince is beginning to follow in his father's footsteps, throwing people in the stocks for minor infractions and meting out physical punishment whenever he sees fit.
That's is, until a troublesome servant turns up to teach him that his true power lies in his ability to inspire those around him.
Physical discipline seems to be entirely unnecessary for Merlin - who is always so horrified by the prospect of having to actually do his job that asking him to perform his normal duties is punishment enough for any infraction - but there is something about the way that he gasps and hisses in his grasp that makes Arthur want to play rough.
As Arthur starts to treat his people with a more gentle hand, he comes to realise that when he slaps Merlin around the head for being an idiot, what he's really saying is "I love you".

“Yes, my lord,” Merlin lies, as always.It is a long night, and he sleeps in tiny fits on the floor. His bed, the warmest place in his little room, clear of the chill stone of the keep, has been completely taken over. Bits of milk are fed to the puppy with a clean rag, taking ages to get even a sip in the fussy thing. “You really are just like Arthur, you know,” he says to the dog. “You need such an awful lot of attention.”
