Summary
1941 is the London Blitz and the year that MI5 really comes into its own with the now infamous ‘double cross’ system. The service keep tabs on suspects, root out enemy agents and try to turn them into doubles.
Anthony J Crowley is fucking great at this job. He can be sneaky, underhanded and damn ruthless but also charming and kind. It’s what makes him good at turning.
Aziraphale is just a regular Soho bookseller who loves his shop and books and good food and wine when he’s approached by a woman claiming to be MI5, wanting to recruit him for espionage. The poor man is too trusting and gets the shock of his life when he’s approached by a charming but dangerous-looking man also claiming to be MI5.
Crowley recruits Aziraphale to double cross a double crosser and Aziraphale takes to espionage like a duck to water.
Danger, hijinks, and sex ensue.

Crowley glared at him and marched over to grab the book from his hand.
“Are you reading a bloody herpetology book?” He flipped through the pages, seeing bookmarks on various pages about snake health and habitat. Crowley turned the book to look at the cover, and noticed that the angel had miracled it to look like a Jane Austen novel so he could do his research conspicuously.
Crowley tossed the book to the side with a growl. “Angel, we’ve been over this! I’m a demon, one of the legion of the fallen, the original tempter of Eden, former representative of Hell Plenipotentiary. I am NOT a blimey PET who needs ROCK FEATURES in my VIVARIUM.”
He let out another long, frustrated growl, while reaching behind to try to rub at his back, before marching straight over to the antique metal stove to bend and rub himself against it.

Aziraphale leaves for Heaven to help with The Second Coming, but not everything Upstairs is as it seems. Crowley runs away from his problems until he is suddenly summoned by a trio of unlikely friends trying to save the world (again). Through misadventures, imprisonments, immortal attempted suicide, lucid dreaming, dealing with teenagers, and an off-putting amount of bebop, an angel and a demon try to find their way back to each other as Heaven and Hell close in around them. (I'm aware that this starts off slow. It starts getting good around chapters 5-6, but the Epilogue might be my favorite part.)

Courting, in heaven, was all about pageantry.
Crowley had been an angel, once. He remembered the pomp and circumstance of it all, how his fellow angels would damn near lose their minds trying to make sure that every little thing was absolutely perfect, to the letter. It had all seemed so silly back then, back when Crowley had gone by a different name and had woven galaxies and stars into nebulas across the cosmos. He’d rolled his eyes at it all, but he’d always secretly wondered what it would be like, to find someone that made all that fuss seem worth it.
That was before the Fall, and the Garden, and a wall where a swordless angel asked his first question and shielded a demon from the rain.
Crowley knew that if he was going to win the Principality’s heart, he was going to have to do it the old fashioned way.
