Peter startles awake when someone shakes him.
“Sorry, honey,” May says. Peter blinks a couple times and she comes into focus, her hair pulled back from her face. She’s trying not to look a certain way, but he can see it in her eyes anyway. She clears her throat, keeps talking. “But it’s…” She glances away, wets her lips. “You gotta get ready.”
He remembers what day it is, and his heart beats like a drum at someone’s execution. But he tries to put on a mask, make it all seem normal. It’s everything but, despite the fact that he’s been dealing with reaping day since he was born, between himself, Ben and May. That fear that one of them could be taken away. Sent to surefire slaughter. But now Ben is gone, taken despite never having his name drawn from a bowl, and May’s finally safe. Now Peter’s name is in there alone. The last Parker sitting on the chopping block. He doesn’t know how to be. He doesn’t know what normal is, when the Hunger Games are looming on the horizon.

Tony's face is the first thing to come into focus. If the blurry outline of him can be called focus.
"Tell me before May gets in here," Tony says, gravely serious. He rests his hand gently on Peter's shoulder. "I'm giving you that chance. What's going on?"
Peter knows he can't hide it anymore. He wants to sigh, but it hurts too much. Everything hurts too much. It shouldn't hurt this much.

“You matter,” Peter says, and he lets out a big sigh that someone his age shouldn’t have to contend with.

“You liked parties—”
“Yeah,” Tony says, a little laugh-sob escaping him, and he’s only told Peter about some of his antics. “But I—I wasn’t ready for…a situation like this.”

Summary
This really wasn’t the kind of mission you could just mess up. He knew that going in. Maybe that’s why he brought the kid with him. He’s so damn smart, so eager, that Tony knew he’d get the job done, even if he took an absolutely backwards way to do so.
What’s annoying is that Peter totally knew it was going to end bad. What’s more annoying is that Tony knew he knew. He should have brought him home. He should have listened to the kid when his voice got all shaky and he specially asked to get the hell out of there. So many shoulds and shouldn’ts that Tony can’t focus on right now. What he does know for sure though is that had he listened, Peter wouldn’t be withering on the dimly lit cell floor, desperately clawing his ears and coughing up blood. Yeah, Tony fucked up big time.
