Somehow, her hands land on Laira’s cheeks. Her thumbs are brushing over the ridges of her cheekbones, feels the heat of her blush under her palms. Her eyes can’t look away from the image of her: eyes closed, lashes fluttering, hair so thoroughly and wonderfully disheveled at her hands.
“'I'm gonna fall asleep if you keep doing that.” Laira murmurs, but her eyes don’t open, and she makes no move to get off the couch.

The primary points of AU canon divergence here are that the baby Changeling from “The Begotten” (S5E12) survived, Jadzia was not killed in "Tears of the Prophets" (S6E26), Bashir and Garak managed to resolve all those years of UST sometime in the later seasons, and all this resulted in (nearly) everyone’s canon endings getting scrambled.
