Despite Sokka’s forewarning that he would be coming and Zuko’s eventual confirmation via text that he would be there, Vulca’s gym leader is very decidedly not where he is supposed to be.
“You’re welcome to try,” Iroh replies, trying way too hard to sound serious and radiating amusement instead. “If you’d like, you’re welcome to battle me in Zuko’s stead.” He has that authority, Sokka knows, because Zuko’s told him so even though Vulca’s gym regent isn’t well advertised. Nevertheless, he shakes his head.
“No. It doesn’t count as a rematch if it’s you. Besides, I need to go find him and pound some manners into his damn head.”
“Again, you are very welcome to try.”]
Or,
Sokka gets blown off, helps rescue a pokémon, and maybe rescues Zuko a little bit too.

Summary
Toph will happily admit that she genuinely, honestly, likes Zuko. She has told her friends this repeatedly. She thinks Aang is starting to get it, but that’s because he’s realized Zuko is probably one of the only firebenders that won’t try to kill him on sight.
She would never admit it, but she sees herself in the way that Katara and Zuko argue, in the way Zuko never seems to fully understand what Sokka is trying to say, and in the way even now she still feels her temper flare with Aang. It reminds her, weirdly, a lot of herself in the early days of their little adventure, where she was still trying to find her footing.

She crawls out of the sand pit they'd dragged her into, panting and desperate. Her skin is raw, dirt caked under her nails, and even though her legs are shaking with exhaustion, she runs, putting as much distance as she can between them and her.

Not every thread they’ve followed has led them into places like this, suited for nights out under the stars. Derek’s almost thankful for it, at this point. The both of them are familiar with cities, though neither of them has had the heart to try New York again, and there are a surprising amount of nearly-true urban legends around the world. Hurrying through crosswalks and grabbing street food keeps them busy in the downtime outside of research and wandering into places they probably shouldn’t be. Hiking trips unravel into long conversations, dragging old memories into the light, things Derek mostly wants to forget. Even when they trail off, there’s a lingering intimacy that he’s not sure what to do with. They know each other too well now.
Kira and Derek travel the world together fifteen years after their first meeting. She drags him into a forest in Oregon to investigate a ghost story, or perhaps the ghost of a story.
