Summary

Summary
Merlin visits Lake Avalon every year on the anniversary of Arthur's death. Every year, he makes the same wish - that he would once again be reunited with Arthur.
Merlin lies down in the grassy outcrop that replaced the dried up lake and dreams of Arthur. He still thinks he's dreaming when Lake Avalon fills back up with thrashing, frigid water and threatens to take him away from the land of the living.
When Merlin is drowning, he dreams of Arthur's face. He dreams that he feels Arthur's strong arms holding him once again, pulling him from the grasp of the lake and onto the safety of the shoreline.
Merlin still thinks he's dreaming when Arthur speaks to him and reassures him that he's here to stay. It's almost too real for Merlin to handle.
But, what if it wasn't a dream, after all?

Arthur is the Detective Chief Inspector of the CaPD (Camelot Police Department). Merlin works there as a forensic scientist. Although they're attracted to each other, their relationship is nothing more than physical relief and, most importantly for Arthur, secret.
Together they solve cases involving magic, even though Merlin hasn't shared his most important secret with Arthur yet. For good reason. After all, sorcerers are despised in the eyes of the Pendragons. Will they eventually acknowledge their feelings for each other and admit them? A year after Arthur’s death, Gwen has also died. Merlin panics about what will come next for Camelot, until Arthur’s sudden return forces Merlin to confront the feelings he has been trying to avoid for the last year.

In which Arthur has to sit through yet another feast when he would rather be with Merlin, only this one is made much worse when his guests begin asking questions about his consort, and then about his loyalty to said consort. What follows after the feast is a collapse onto the bed as Arthur spends the rest of his night in Merlin’s arms.

“I said,” Merlin enunciates, rolling his eyes. He gets a knee over Arthur’s thigh, pressing it into the mattress and fixing the perch of his glasses. “What’s wrong with my glasses?”
Arthur gapes at him, before dropping onto his pillow with a sigh as he stares up at the ceiling. What has this night come to? He was supposed to go over his report and then sleep. And then came Merlin, complaining about the fucking water pressure, dripping wet and smelling like that with his low slung pyjamas and utter lack of respect for Arthur’s sanity, taking over his mind and night. Arthur can’t have one second of peace.

Arthur notices Merlin smells nice. He then can’t stop noticing and nearly loses his mind about it.

Arthur finds out Merlin has magic. He also finds out how often Merlin risked his life for him and so, he does the only thing he can think of to protect him: banishment.
Hurt and angry, Merlin leaves and swears to not look back.
But, when two years pass and Morgana shows up at Merlin’s door, urging him to fill Gaius’ position as Court Physician, Merlin agrees. He really doesn’t know why, but Arthur is sure Merlin would do just about anything to get on his nerves.
Unprepared for the shock of seeing Merlin back in the castle, Arthur is forced to speed along his plans to lift the ban on magic. But between stubborn councilors, a mysterious plague, a still angry Merlin, and Morgana being Morgana, Arthur is fairly certain he’ll lose his mind before the first year of his reign even ends.
