When Mike comes back from the restroom, he looks worse than before.
Gerry waits what feels like a very polite length of time. "What the hell is it, Mike? You're acting like a–"
Mike jerks up and leans in close, and Gerry goes quiet. Mike spits out a harshly-whispered, "You got a pad?"
Oh. Gerry blinks, surprised, and oh so aware of the way Mike is watching him for any reaction whatsoever. He's taut like when he thinks he's hearing thunder in the distance, defiant and watchful but entirely taken over by paranoid waiting. Gerry carefully keeps his face and voice neutral and shakes his head once. "Nah," he says, and thank god he tends to run dry for tone these days. "Don't need them, never thought to carry any around before."

Jon turns to their left, then to their right. Turns back to face their reflection directly, narrows their eyes. Bounces, just a little, on the tips of their toes, ignoring the heat prickling in their cheeks, ignoring his grandmother’s voice warning him of the dangers lurking within his reflection. Says, Hmmm, skeptical, but wondering. Bounces again. Maybe … ?
They turn back to their left. Looks over their shoulder and slowly rotates their torso, following the line of his chest in the mirror. Is that a faint swelling, there where before he has always been sharp and nearly concave? He rises up onto his heels, bounces. Hesitates a moment before reaching up and cupping their—their pec, with one hand, trying to imagine—is there perhaps a weight there that hasn’t been before? A curve rising to meet their palm? She pushes her palm up, a little higher, cupping the line of her chest, trying to decide if the artificial swell is larger than it was yesterday, or the week before, or the month before.
In the quiet aftermath, Jon seeks to make their body their own. Martin does what he can to support them.

It can't go on. And Martin thinks that he might have a solution.

Martin knows how he should feel about his lot in life—terrible. He should feel terrible.
After all, he’s trapped in a dungeon with a hungry god who will one day eat him, regardless of how either of them feel about the prospect. Martin should feel terrified and miserable as he’s slowly fattened up for the big event. He should be clawing at the walls, desperate to escape.
There’s also quite a few things he shouldn’t be doing. He shouldn’t feel sorry for the god; he shouldn’t find him oddly sweet; he shouldn’t want to feed him.
He should not agree when the god offers to play into his most humiliating fetishes in order to make him feel better about his impending death. (Even if he did agree, it definitely shouldn’t work.)
And most of all, definitely he shouldn’t fall in love with the divine being that’s going to gobble him up whole. That wouldn’t make any sense at all.

Jon stares into the box of pins. There's two from a newer set sitting at the top, ones sporting pronouns. Jon figured it would be easier to wear those rather than having Martin ask which set to use, and so had bought them not too long ago. On most days, Jon would wear both the pins reading “he/him” and “they/them”, though occasionally would only wear one of the two. Like most things involving Jon and gender these days, it just depends on the day.

“Wait, so you don’t...?” Martin begins, and Jon can feel himself physically cringe in anticipation to— to— to what? To Martin saying he’s weird? For Martin to laugh and say yeah right, because who the hell doesn’t get that? C’mon Jon, that’s basic stuff. Be serious.
But then he looks up, and Martin’s not grinning at him. He doesn’t burst out laughing like he had before, nor does he roll his eyes and shake his head. He just sits there, mouth formed into a silent “oh” shape as if he’s just made a significant discovery, as if some puzzle he’s been working on has finally clicked into place. Martin looks up, meets Jon’s gaze with his wide, hypnotically brown eyes (they really are quite pretty, Jon’s noticed as they’ve spent more time together, much darker than his own and perfectly shaped to fit his face) and then he leans across the table.
“Um, Jon,” Martin begins softly, as if the empty cafe could be listening in on them, “you don’t have to tell me this if I’m overstepping here obviously, but...is this like...an ace thing?”Jon's quite used to being left out of secrets, it's just this particular one that really gets to him.
