Summary
Flying back to Cherry Street, weaving reckless in the dark, it comes down to this: Dick is the only one of his siblings that Jason has any real claim on. Dick is the only one of that whole mess of victims to Batman's cult of self-immolation who belongs to Jason. Even more than that - Dick is the only person in the world who he shares a parent with, who knows what it meant to be the Robin to Batman of nearly ten years ago.
It's just not the same anymore.
So if Dick fucking kicks it, Jason's the only one left. Jason becomes an only child. Jason becomes the last of his kind. Jason becomes the sole keeper of that memory, of a brotherhood shared under a man who no longer exists. There is no way to replace Dick, because the world that they lived in together is gone, and can never give Jason a surrogate.
The Red Hood pulls the thread on a mystery big enough to bridge the distance between two cities, two brothers: The plot they unravel is far deeper and darker than a garden-variety drug trafficking scheme. A story about siblingship, hauntings, and rivers.

Jason had stared dumbly at the contents of the time machine – the sun-faded quilt from his childhood bed, red-brown and ochre. The silver Sony CD player with a kink in the cord from where it had been wrapped around the leg of his desk. Books. Model cars. A polaroid camera. All of it plucked from the aether. Jason hadn’t known what he was supposed to say. As he’d looked at it, the manifestation of the childhood he lost, at Alfred’s face, changed by seven years of misery, he’d felt it all creep up on him at once: the certainty had echoed up from the foundation beneath him. His eyes had been pulled to look at the ceiling, to a yellowing water stain in the corner that Alfie had never been able to banish – out, damn spot. Jason knew in that moment that they weren’t alone.
There you are, he’d thought, eyes locked on the ripples of rot. I see you.
In the present, Jason swallows. His throat sticks. “Do you think,” he asks rigidly, “that there is something in that house?”

Peter Parker, like any 14 year old superhero mutant, really wants to catch a break. And yet somehow, he never gets one. He's just a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, nothing special, so what gives?
Well, that's only if you don't look at his biology ever since the radioactive spider bite. Or his extensive track record of running away from his guardians and that he was homeless for a bit. Or the amount of people in his life that have died because he's some kind of bad luck charm. Or that his foster-dad is Tony Stark now.
Or the fact that he was randomly kidnapped one morning on his way to school, and now he's in an alternate universe with a bunch of strange vigilantes that keep stalking him.
He thinks they mean well, but they're really weird. Besides that Red Hood guy. He's pretty cool. Though something about them- especially Nightwing- is familiar, that's not important. He has enough on his plate right now, considering there are multiple people trying to upend the fabric of time and space. He can figure out the other details later.

He was heat lightning in the sense that heat lightning is not truly heat and is not truly lightning— at least, not in the way we understand lightning to be. Instead, it’s a reflection of lightning from clouds too high up to see, too distant to hear. It’s an illusion dancing in condensation at the end of a hot summer day, when the humidity is choking and sticky and the skin loses the ability to sweat out the fever. It’s a mirage in heaven, it’s a physical manifestation of the division separating the power of light from the power of sound, as thunderclaps can only travel ten miles while lightning can be seen from 100 miles away. Distant thunderstorms, distant longing, like seeing the smiling face of your once-lover in train window reflections and billboards and strangers on the street, the brief image flickering away on the double-take. A fake. A fantasy.
That was what this time with Suguru was to Satoru— a distant reflection of something too far away to touch, to hear. A trick of the eyes, of the season. Heat lightning.
