Gale finds himself nodding tentatively, "It aches."
"I suppose a little divine pain relief is too much to ask for," Astarion scoffs.

Summary
Having lived in self imposed exile in Waterdeep, Gale's knowledge on vampires is enough to fill a thimble at best. He decides the best way to learn about them is to study them up close, i.e get to know/observe Astarion as they travel together in an effort to get rid of the tadpoles in their brains.
Gale learns more about Astarion and himself over the course of their journey, either intentionally or unintentionally carving out a space in his heart for the other man.

Weeks from Baldur’s Gate and the confinement of Cazador's mansion, runaway Astarion is saved from a winter's storm by a strange, sickly wizard. A fresh meal, ripe for the taking. Perhaps he would be forced to reconsider his stance on miracles.

Gale scoffs and winces when the slight motion of his chest shifts the spear again. “Begging your pardon for the inconvenience, but if it’s any consolation, the prospect of spending my last moments with you isn’t exactly thrilling for me, either.”
Astarion crosses his arms. “Glad we agree on something.”

Summary
There was silence. Neither of them said anything, they didn’t even move.
Gale regarded him with wide eyes, seemingly taking his features in anew. Then, he scoffed, straightening up to sit on his bedroll. “Of course. I can’t believe I didn’t see it.”
No fucking way. He was not being this arrogant, this insufferable, in this moment. Astarion must’ve misheard him, only he knew he hadn’t.
“You think yourself that smart, Gale?” he asked with narrow eyes, face twisting with distaste.
“Yes, in fact I do.” Gale replied, his tone returning all of Astarion’s hostility. “I am a studied wizard after all. I’ve read all about your kind, assuming you are merely a spawn.”
“Merely.” Astarion repeated. He kept quiet for a while, attempting to discern what Gale was going to do. He discreetly wrapped his hand around the dagger he hid in the hem of his pants, just in case.
The wizard seemed to be lost in thought for a while. Eventually he looked up at Astarion, his eyes twinkling in the moonlight. “Did you plan to kill me?”
“What?” Astarion choked on the word.

Summary
Astarion fast-talks an abnormal number of enemies into killing themselves in the shadow-cursed lands and the team makes idle (then less idle) conversation about it. It’s completely fine and doesn’t bother him at all and it absolutely doesn’t draw additional questions about why he does what he does for the team... and what they in turn would do for him.
IE: Origin-run Astarion fic because its interesting to me how the party reacts to their vampire buddy if he doesn’t have Tav to be a social buffer for him. Act 2 content and spoilers.

“What did you do,” Astarion snarled, and it sounded awful in his borrowed voice. He all but shoved Shadowheart out of the way and fell to his knees, clutching Gale tight by the shoulders, almost shaking. “You fucking fool, I told you not to touch it.”
“I-” Gale stammered uselessly, his face pale and stricken and Astarion hated how Gale managed to make him look so pitiful.

Summary
Astarion had warmed up considerably with the reveal of his secret, and the revelation that not only were they not about to execute him for the crime of existing, but that they were willing to shed their own blood to feed him.
Nevertheless, slow starvation isn't the peril of the shadow-cursed lands, and it did rather scupper his usual modus operandi. Difficult to remain unseen when lit up like a beacon in the dark.
Or, more whump for the Tadfool boys.
