Daniel can tell right away that something is deeply, unsettlingly wrong. And that’s when he realizes that Armand hasn’t moved his legs once in Daniel’s sight, which has been trained on him nearly the entire time. How long had it taken Louis to recover from his spinal injury?
“He had a lot more going on,” Armand wheezes. “But, to answer your question without consulting your abysmal recordings? Months.”
“Uh, they’re not so easily consulted at the moment,” Daniel says, trying to maintain his balance. It’s going to be a fucking miracle if he can get himself back on his feet, let alone haul a temporarily paralyzed Armand along with him. “I’m gonna let the head thing slide for the time being.”
“The head thing?”
“You. In mine.”
“How generous.”
“The way I see it,” Daniel says, “I’m your only ticket out of here if you’re in as bad a shape as I think you are. Tell me I’m wrong.”

It wasn't fascinating, the way the boy didn't know whether to lean into the touch or away from it, confused by the comfort and the pain it offered in equal measures. It wasn't. Armand could do the same thing — did do the same thing, whenever Louis deigned to touch him at all — and Louis still thought he was boring. It couldn't be this that had captivated him.
But that didn't mean it wasn't fun.

Flash, goes the camera in Daniel’s mind. The low lights in the bar catch on dark lenses of his glasses, reflecting back at him his own flushed face. He can’t see Armand’s eyes. Maybe that’s the point, hiding them away from the unsuspecting humans who all think he’s one of them.

A kid, in his 20s. Black tousled curls, green eyes. His cheeks are round, some baby fat still clinging to him, but it’s offset by the strong line of his jaw and a square chin. Frank’s knife aches in his pocket; he wants to flick it open, press the tip of it into those cheeks, first one, then the other. Watch the flesh dip, then split and part for the blade. He wants to carve that face.
“I’m headed for Nevada,” he says. “Any bit could help.”
“Hey, it’s your lucky day!” the kid says with a broad grin that stretches his plush cupid lips really far. “Hop in!”
Frank climbs into the back seat, slips off his backpack.
“Thank you boys so much,” he says, extends a hand. “My name’s Frank.”
The kid on the passenger side shakes it, easy and firm.
“I’m Daniel, this is Armand.”
Or: it's 1979, two maniacs are in love, and serial killers make for good lunch.

“Of course,” Armand replies demurely. “Perhaps a chew toy might be in order,” he breathes very lightly, looking down studiously at his iPad.

Summary
Marc had a strict morning routine that he had rarely deviated from in recent memory… and not so recent memory. He got up, brushed his teeth, took a shower, turned on the coffee pot, made some kind of breakfast while the pot heats up, consumed both, and read the paper while he did so. Followed that up with any personal grooming and then finished getting dressed, a different uniform depending on the tasks at hand for that day, or occasionally civvies if he was doing something off-base. It was a strict routine, but it helped, stamped down on any chaos that might try to slip into his life.
If he knew all it took was one gift card for it to go completely off the rails he probably wouldn’t have made it this far. Though he’s glad he did.

But hey, this is the only head they've got. They'll just have to figure out how to live in it -- one step at a time.
