Summary
Sam glanced over the mottled bruises and thick scars wrapping around his torso, accompanied by a hollow stomach and protruding ribs. Dried blood coated his side, spilled from a large gash in his abdomen. Tremors ran up his spine, making him fight so hard to sit still under Sam’s hands. His tearful eyes refused to make contact, like he was afraid of what would follow if he did.
Like this, he didn’t seem so scary. Just… fragile, like tempered glass beneath the threat of a nail.
Or: Sam stumbles across an injured and fearful man in the middle of the night, one month after Triskelion. After bringing him back to his apartment to treat his wounds, he realizes just who — what — he's brought into his home.

“It’s the simulation of sight,” he says, when Bucky doesn’t speak. “It records the world, then replays those images directly to the part of your brain that processes sight. There is a .003 second delay. Isn’t it phenomenal, Barnes? Now you can be fixed!”
Somehow, the silence feels even heavier. A weighted thing.
Then Bucky speaks lowly, barely moving his features: “I – am – not – broken.”
Steve’s heart contracts. He places his hand on Bucky’s arm and feels the tension radiating off him.
Tony blanches. “No! That’s not – I never implied! Look, we all want upgrades, don’t we? This is just the chance – the opportunity –”
“Tony,” says Steve again, this time gently reproving. Bucky has spoken enough. He doesn’t need to be convinced further. He squeezes Bucky’s arm, a signal that says they can leave if he wants.
But Bucky doesn’t move an inch. His face is made of stone. “I will not have a part of me owned by someone else,” he says. “Stark Industries, or anyone else. I will not be given something that can be taken away or used against me.”

It's one thing to have a crush on your straight best friend, to pine from a distance and maybe think about it on dark nights, alone in your room where no one can find you. It's another to know exactly what his body feels like on top of yours, what his hands feel like in your hair, what his tongue feels like against your own, and to know you’ll never feel it again

There was a tension that crept into Bucky's body as he stumbled to the end of those words, giving the lie to them. It didn't take Steve more than a few breaths to know what Bucky was lying about, and why.
He did know what he needed, and it was something he couldn't name, because to name it would be to ask for it--and he knew Steve would give him anything he asked for right now.
What Bucky wanted was something he didn't want to extort from Steve. It was something that couldn't be stolen.

"We need to keep you intact," Howard murmured, his voice steadier as he pushed the last of the intestinal loops back inside. "Too valuable to waste."

HYDRA never would’ve allowed him to do this. Lying in the grass, looking up at the sky? Not mission-compliant, that’s for sure. How would Pierce or Zola react to seeing him laying out like this? There’s no way of knowing now. Bucky’s outlived the bastards.
Laughter wells up in his chest and escapes before he can stop it.
“Bucky?”
Steve’s face appears above him, looking concerned. Steve is here to worry about whether or not he’s finally lost it. He throws his hands up in the air and gestures wildly. Can’t Steve see it? The absurdity of this situation? He’s been captured, tortured, experimented on, made to kill- he’s pretty sure- presidents, and now he’s jogging through a park in Brooklyn with Steve Rogers, who never thought he’d live to see thirty.
“We’re alive, Steve!” He cries half hysterically when the giggles die down.
“Yeah?” Steve’s still looking at him like he’s lost all his marbles.
“We’re here. We’re still here. After all this time.”
Slowly, slowly, Steve’s face cracks into a grin. “Yeah, Buck. Still here.”
He gets it, Bucky can see. He gets it the way no one else can. Oh, he’d kiss him if he could. He settles for reaching a hand up and knowing that Steve will reach down to help him back to his feet.

He took the apartment they shared, the little inside jokes, the black eyes and scars and skinned knuckles. He took Steve, with his golden hair and bright blue eyes and crooked nose and sweet smile. He took Steve and cradled him as carefully as he would a baby bird in his palm. He took Steve in his illness and in his newfound health, Steve who’d seen him at his best and his worst, who stuck by him when he had nothing and when he had everything. Steve, who Bucky would love until the day he died. He took Steve and folded him up carefully and wrapped him up in newspaper and packed him safely away into the box, never to be opened again.

And you are gonna sleep, Buck, because if I’m holding you like this, nobody in the fucking world can hurt you.”
He can feel the shiver that runs down Bucky’s spine and prays to god it’s not from the cold before he continues. “During the day, you’re by my side. Right where you’re supposed to be. And when we finish this, when we win, we’re gonna go far away from here. Where no one knows who Captain America is, and no one wants anything from Bucky Barnes. I’ll find us a house. Somewhere warm. By the beach maybe. Build us a bigger bed than this… and we’re not gonna leave until we both forget the taste of blood. You can play the piano, and I’ll make art with actual colors and no one is ever gonna take you away from me again. You got that?”
Bucky’s voice is wrecked when he answers. Steve can smell the salt in his tears. “Yeah.”
