Summary
It isn't fair, really. Nothing about the situation is, and Jack Kelly is sick of it.
The situation at hand? The fact that he's on the floor, sketchbooks and pencils strewn about, while David and Katherine share the bed. It's not fair, because it's torture, and it's not fair, because they look so pretty sitting high atop a dorm room bed, the light flittering in past Katherine's thin lace curtains, and it's not fair, because Jack wishes he could have just that: the comfort of being next to them.
Maybe that’s a little too dramatic. He is dating them, after all.

“You wore your cross today,” David points out, voice soft, tender, and Jack sucks in a sharp breath.
David, ever observant, is right, and Jack wishes that he wasn’t.

“I get out of class at 5:30 on Wednesday,” David says, looking at the planner section of his notebook. “Do you wanna meet at 6 in the library, then? Figure everything out?”
Jack nods. “Yeah, sure. We can, uh, maybe bring some ideas. For the debate, or whatever.”
“Or whatever,” David repeats, giving Jack an unimpressed look. His head tilts just slightly to the left, and Jack watches David’s gaze look him up and down, like he’s sizing him up. Like he’s looking for his next meal, and Jack is the sorry piece of shit in his way. “Text me. I’ll see you on Wednesday.”

Jack and David live in different worlds. Frat parties and gay bars, chapter meetings and drag queens, beer pong and passenger-seat weed- they're a match doomed to fail, and they're waiting for the wreckage.
But maybe they're more similar than they seem. Maybe they just need some time to figure it out.
Maybe it comes down to decisions and choices, masks and veils, and how to straddle the line between them.

“I’m gonna miss it a lot,” He said, and Jack watched the way he barely tilted his head back to take another sip from the bottle, the way his Adam’s apple bobbed with his swallow. “New York, I mean. All of my friends.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah,” David whispered.
“I’m sure it’ll be tough for a while,” He said softly, then gently bumped David’s side with his elbow. “But you’re a tough cookie, Davey. Smart as a whip, funny… handsome,” Jack snickered, and David rolled his eyes, but he smiled that beautiful, lopsided smile of his. “You’re gonna do big things, Jacobs. And people are gonna fall in love with ya.”
David looked at him, brows knitted together, but he grinned nonetheless. “I’ll miss you most, Jack."

Jack pushes himself up off of her, sitting up and letting his shoulders sag. "It just– it feels like I don’t do enough, ‘nd one day you’re gonna wake up, and just… not want this anymore. I can’t give you a better home, I can’t buy you better gifts, I can’t do any of that stuff, and there’s fuckin’ people out there that’ll give you hell for it.”
“So what?” Katherine asks. “Let them talk. I don’t care about what they say, Jack. Not when I know I have you.” She sits up as well, placing a warm hand on his shoulder and squeezing, feeling the taut muscle underneath dark skin. “I promise, Jack. I don’t care.”
“I do,” he whispers, letting out another deep sigh. Katherine opens her arms, and Jack tries to fight it- gnaws on his bottom lip, flexes his hands against his thighs- but he soon falls back into her arms, resting his forehead against her shoulder. “I care, Kath. I don't want to, but I have to. I have to care."

Essek's head swivels as he continues, "I know that human noses are not so sharp, but surely one of you must've picked it up these past few days. He was scenting all through dinner yesterday."
"S-Scenting!?" Fjord splutters, squeaking, like that is the important part of what Essek said.
"You have smelt oddly like coconut and sunshine these past few days," Caduceus dutifully informs him.
He's slightly drowned out by several people shouting, "Heat!?" Of them, Jester's the only one to follow up, hysterically exclaiming, "This was never in Tusk Love!"
Or; Fjord's first ever orcish heat hits the day after Essek stays for dinner. In typical wizard fashion, Caleb and Essek manage to make it all about themselves.
