When his phone rang loud in the stillness, waking Jack from the sleep of the dead he'd perfected in war zones half a world away, he sat straight up in bed and knew: something was wrong.
His phone announced it was Dana—and it was 0721—which shot a little thrum of worry through him as he answered. "What happened?" he asked, no preamble. She wouldn't wake him if shit hadn't gone sideways.
"Robby hasn't come in yet and he's not answering his phone," she said, voice grim. "He's never missed a shift without calling." She spoke quietly, probably standing in the middle of the ED, trying to keep up a brave face for everyone else. As much as she could, anyway. People tended to notice when the fucking chief attending didn't show up to work.

But after the mayhem and heartache of the Pitt Fest MCI, Jack was too wired to sleep, so he stopped by his favorite gay bar, hoping to find some companionship to take his mind off everything he saw and felt that day. The last person he expected to see there was Robby.

An ongoing existential crisis, he heard himself say, far back in his mind.
But when every day feels never-ending and too fast-paced at once, Robby was sure that his last month could easily equal a lifetime.
How many more do I have to live through?
He found himself drawn more and more to that question.

He looks more like a guy you'd see heading up a running club, middle-aged and tall and broad-shouldered, bearded but not in a hippie kind of way, and it's only when he says, "Welcome to class. You're new, right? I'm Robby. Any injuries I need to know about before we get started?" that Jack realizes he's the instructor.

"Did you find a foster?”“No.” Casey glanced through the window into the room. Frank faced away from them, but they could see the gentle rise and fall of his chest. “No one will take him. He’s going to have to stay here for treatment.”
“Can I foster him?” It was out of his mouth before he even realized. Sure, he wanted to ask, but he didn’t want to sound too eager about it. Casey gave him a withering, suspicious glare and he found himself rambling. “I want to. He’s a sweet kid, and I’m a doctor! I’m prepared to take care of him. And I live with my sister who is in school to be a doctor, too. And we have an accessible bathroom already, for after his surgery. My whole house is accessible! Ramps for wheelchairs and all one level. And! It’s a good neighborhood.”
“You got an ulterior motive?” Casey asked, thankfully cutting him off.
Robby hesitated. Her frown hardened and the words spilled out of him, “We clicked. He’s a good kid. I—I wanna adopt him.”

It wasn’t as if one day Robby woke up and realized that he hadn’t touched another human being outside of his patients in months, that he hadn’t felt someone's hand touch his, hadn’t felt arms wrap around him, someone grabbing him and holding him close.
