Eddie draws a line with the tip of his index finger: following Steve’s happy trail, lifting his t-shirt and exposing his abs, the soft swell of fat over muscle, the dotted moles, dark body hair. Claudia’s face crumpled, and just when she was on the precipice of collapse, she turned towards Steve and Dustin. All of Joana’s pleas turned dull and quiet, and in the stillness, it was just the three of them. He kept his eyes locked forward, trying to apologize without words for a man who never learned how. Her eyes crinkled at the corners, and he understood. It wouldn’t be easy, but they would figure it out. Together.
He just wasn’t expecting ‘figuring it out’ to drag him back to Hawkins, Indiana after he’d left it in the metaphorical rear view.
