After a second of hesitation, Jack slowly lifts his hand to cup her chin and tilt her head up, forcing her to make eye contact with him. She hears the rumble of his voice and the soothing lilt to his tone as he makes some sweet and way to generous offer as he so often does, trying to cajole her into letting him help solve her problems, but she can't hear it over the sound of blood rushing to her ears as she sinks into the dark, gaping chasm of childhood that split open in her mind.

“Yeah,” Ed murmurs. The hands on Stede’s hips smooth around to the small of his back and Ed squeezes gently. “Doin’ good.”
“Good. You’re doing very well, Ed.” Ed hums against the thin skin of Stede’s throat, then presses a kiss to it. “Remember that you can stop me if you need to.”

After finally feeling like he deserves to feel good with Stede, and knowing and accepting that Stede wants to make him feel good, Ed is on top of the world. That is of course until he realizes that one rapturous handjob will not fix his penchant for self-degradation. Thankfully, Stede is right by his side encouraging him to be honest about what he’s feeling, and helping him set (and enforce) boundaries for himself, because it will take a lot of work for them to be ready for physical intimacy again.
What do you call a slow burn fic where they’ve already been dating and banging for over a month at this point, but now they have to pause and rewrite the rules of their relationship, because Ed has been hiding his unhealthy thought and behavior patterns from Stede the whole time? Because that’s what this is.
Aftermath of the previous work in the series (the rapturous handjob fic) - Still. One could probably enjoy this fic without reading Still but its recommended.

When Stede comes back to Ed, he’s changed. He’s more confident, more sure of himself, more capable. While Ed struggles to understand who he is (Blackbeard? The Kracken? Edward?) and what his place is after all that has happened, Stede looks after him. Stede takes care of him. Stede tells him what to do, and Ed finds that he likes it—he likes Stede being in control.
One night, when he is alone in the captain’s quarters (earlier in the evening Stede was there, saying, Ed, come here and let me re-braid your hair—there are pieces coming loose everywhere) Ed thinks about Stede and considers the ways he’s changed, the ways he’s still the same, and gets the first erection he’s had in months that wasn’t morning wood. He touches himself in Stede’s old bed, thinks about Stede’s orders morphing into something else: Ed, drop your trousers. Ed, get on your knees. Ed, bend over and let me fuck you like a good boy. He comes with a shudder, shocked at the thoughts and how quickly they put him over the edge.
