Except Emrys, obviously.

Summary
“Merlin, what is in your hair?” Gaius asks - rather judgmentally, Merlin thinks. It’s not as though Gaius can turn into a bird, making his opinion irrelevant. Everyone’s opinions shall now be irrelevant to him unless they can turn into birds, he decides. He puts a hand to his hair and feels a leaf.
(So this is a very canon-inaccurate sort of re-telling, with some big divergences, minus a dragon or prophecy or two)

“What is it now, young warlock?” he said in his mighty voice.
“You know,” Merlin laughed and started pacing, “you give really terrible advice.”
AKA
Merlin disappears for a few days after the events of The Disir. While Arthur searches for him, he discovers little lies told by his servant and Gaius. As Merlin decides to take a different course of action to challenge the prophecy, everything starts to unravel.

Summary
Arthur repeals the ban on magic almost as soon as he becomes king, but things don't really change for Merlin. He knows that if Arthur ever found out about the lies, he'd never be forgiven. So he keeps his magic hidden just like he did before. Then to mark the one year anniversary of the repeal, Arthur hosts a ball. Merlin decides to disguise himself, and go to the ball as Emrys to keep an eye out for his friend. The idea is only partly motivated by jealousy.

Everything changed then.
Uncle Merlin always called Father the Once and Future King, but even he never thought the Future was coming that soon.Or, when would Arthur's skills be the most useful? Sometime later in his own era, that's when. When should Arthur come back? Sometime when his skills are most useful.
