Lewis and Nico weren’t friends, not as they once had been. But they still lived in the same apartment building in Monaco, just as they always had. Which meant that they saw each other now and then – in the foyer, or in a lift, sometimes even in the hallways. Not to mention Nico’s increased presence on race weekends.
Despite everything, though, Lewis had never held anything but love in his heart for first Alaϊa, then eventually Naila (even if he’d had to wait ages to accidentally run into Vivian with the younger of their two girls in the hallway). Whatever had come between him and Nico, it wasn’t enough to dissuade Lewis’ heart from adoring his girls.
Somehow, that unconditional love had turned into Lewis sending a boxful of Christmas gifts to each of Nico’s girls.

A sharp cuff to the side of the head sent Max recoiling, more from the shock than pain. It wasn't hard. Not yet. But it was enough. "Sainz beat you. Maybe he is the real talent." Jos turned and left, slamming the door. The teen let out a breath he hadn't realized holding.After five minutes his phone rang. A message from Carlos.

But that time was long gone, and although his heart galloped wildly still, not aware of how it was supposed to let go, how a man like Lewis Hamilton was destined to have far bigger adventures than falling in love with his best friend - though he guessed he had no right to use that term anymore - Nico didn’t step back.
For years he had loved Lewis Hamilton quietly. The entire world seemed to do the same, so it wouldn’t matter how loud he was, Nico would never be heard over all the noise. So he stood by his side, drove for the same team, all while his heart tried to choose between two of his dreams. But when you push and pull in two different directions, well, the tearing of the heart shouldn’t have come as a surprise at all.
How much he wished things were different. But things weren't different and so there was no point. No point at all. The kiss would have to be just that, and Nico would spend the rest of his life trying to convince himself it could never have worked out anyway. Because Lewis was the way that he was and Nico loved him beyond anything. Because they were cowards and fools, and life was complicated.
Nico Rosberg would love Lewis Hamilton. And then, he would fold that love into a million pieces, put it in his pocket, and walk away, onto better things, onto whatever was waiting for him.
