Soulmarks were something that was apparently a thing before the calamity as well, according to scripture. But most of the time they were just a small mark somewhere on your body. Shared with one person out there that was your soulmate, the one who you were meant to be with. Sadly it was rare after the calamity to ever find that person. So most people ignored them, they were just a mark that made you unique. Or they hid them, not caring about ever meeting that person.
It was just the builder, Celia's, luck that her soulmark matched a wanted criminal? Did she care? She never even thought she would meet her soulmate. It just happened hers wasn't little, and everyone in town knew exactly had the match.
