What was I thinking, putting myself in here? You don’t remember. It’s beginning to disturb you, how much you don’t remember; although when you close your eyes and follow the trail—one event follows upon the other just as you had expected it to; and you can even recall the first time Kira killed, when all you saw was a reporter’s face through the screen of your TV. It was the end of your boredom, because though you were nothing but a spectator to the great battle, you already felt how Kira and L would pull you along in their wake just as any battle between titans would (because you would stand within the event horizon, if only to get closer).

It started innocuously – Misa, being a habitual party-goer and social drinker, begged him to try a drink as they celebrated their victory over L.
Unlike seemingly everyone else his age, Light had never felt the urge to get drunk; the idea of losing control just wasn't desirable to him. Besides, inebriation could make him reveal critical information, and L would grasp onto any mistakes with the strength of a constrictor.
But there's no more L now, is there?

Light scanned the room again. Everyone avoided eye contact, their expressions stuck somewhere between concern and confusion. The silence stretched awkwardly until the door opened and a doctor stepped inside.
Clipboard. Nervous posture. Forced neutrality.
“Young man,” the doctor began, clearing his throat. “We received your blood test results.”
Light narrowed his eyes. His voice came out sharper than he intended. “Blood test? What blood test?”
The doctor hesitated, a bad sign.
“It came back positive.”
Light felt irritation spike. “Positive for what?”
The room tensed as if bracing for impact.
Then the doctor said it, blunt, emotionless, devastating:
“You’re pregnant.”
The world stopped.

Summary
When Near solved the Kira case, he never once fooled himself into thinking that’d be the end of it. Shinigami could get bored anytime, drop their notebooks at any time. It’s highly likely Near would see another Kira by the end of his lifetime, however long that may be. If he were a romantic, Near would say the battle of Kira and L would become an event carrying on past lifetimes, written into the stars.
That was not an invitation for Light Yagami and L’s ghost to show up on his doorstep, though.

He passes the computer to them, and looks them in the eyes.
“Luckily there’s two more Ls in this room.”
And when he sees the flame of a challenge in both of their eyes, ready to tear apart this new Kira and maybe even each other, Near’s certain he’s made the right choice.
He wonders how long it’ll take them. Probably a week, at most. Well, no matter. He’ll have enough time to construct a large scale race track around headquarters, during it. He’s been meaning to test out these new toy cars.

Light sinks down into the leather chair, knees spread. He has one hand around the glass of whiskey, the other resting on his thigh. With careful ease, his hand drifts down and he unbuckles his belt with one hand as the tape goes on. L’s voice is unchanged, almost clinical in nature. It sounds like he’s pacing as he records, sounds like he’s moving through the room like a ghost dragging chains behind him.

He looks up. The sky is full of stars like he had never seen before with the moon as its centerpiece.
Light lets the silence consume them for a moment. He places his hands behind his head, a small smile forming across his lips. Behind his back, the earth feels cold but after digging a grave for two hours, he feels like he is in heaven. The night sky stretches out before his eyes, such a vast tapestry of navy blue. The stars flicker like streetlights, so distant and producing so much light that they seem to illuminate everything in view. It’s like looking at a painting and living in it. He closes his eyes for a fraction of a moment, feeling everything. The wind against his skin, the way gravity holds his body down to the ground, his elbow grazing against dark hair next to him. He opens his eyes again, the sky has not changed.
He almost feels sorry for L. He will not be able to enjoy such a night ever again.
L and Light watch the moon and talk. It’s only Light who says a single word.
