Summary
Sokka has been an unfortunate victim to many uncomfortable realizations in his life.
When he was sixteen it went like this: the deranged, reckless, fire-breathing prince that chased them across half the world was (as little as Sokka wanted to admit it at the time) actually kind of cool. Now, he’s twenty one, sparring across from that same prince (now a king) in a small courtyard at the heart of the Fire Nation, and he realizes that not only is the Fire Lord actually kind of cool– he’s also really pretty.
OR
After the war, Sokka goes to the Southern Water Tribe to help his people rebuild. Five years later, he accepts the role of ambassador to the Fire Nation and returns to a city and a man that are almost unrecognizable.

[“Uhm, I don’t know who you are,” Zuko grumbles into the phone, effectively cutting probably-drunk-guy off, “but this most definitely isn’t your sister.”
It’s quiet for a few moments and if not for the background noise on the other end of the line, Zuko would assume the stranger had hung up.
“Yeah,” the guy says at last, “you don’t sound like Katara at all.”
“Because I’m not,” Zuko mutters, not all too worried about sounding bitter or rude because it’s the middle of the night and most people would be pretty grumpy at being woken up by some probably drunk stranger.
“So who are you then?” the guy asks.
Zuko blinks a couple of times to himself. “Not your sister?”]
OR
Zuko's early morning starts even earlier when he's rudely woken up by a call from a drunk stranger. Turns out this drunk stranger is kind of endearing though.

Ozai is a careless leader. She learns this early on, wary of his scathing tongue and biting words, yet intrigued by how he doesn't hold back, even for the sake of diplomacy. This is not how you rule a country. This is how you start a civil war and lose all your allies.
Azula is careful, she picks and chooses and strikes when the time is right, not before and not after. She realizes that her father is a careless leader, and that, if left to him, the entire Fire Nation will be burnt to the ground. This will not do, Azula will be Fire Lord soon, and a ruler needs her subjects. Logically, the only thing to do in this case is seek the help of her dead brother, traitor uncle, and their miscreant group of friends that they seem to have acquired, including the avatar he was sent to kill.
