Summary
Sayu Yagami was 12 when she found her death note at school, taking it to her brother. Sayu and Light dismissed the Death Note of being real until Ryuk the Shinigami appears in their lives five days later. Horrified of the power the death note has, both decide to keep it and to only use it in case of an emergency. Three years later Light is walking home from Cram School when he's attacked and is saved by Gelus and Rem, he is gifted the shinigami eyes (the last gift from Gelus). But with the sudden appearance of Kira, the Yagami Siblings decide to investigate, they need to find Kira before L.

One boy stood in front of the representatives of the entire world, each staring at him with boiling hatred. Kira would not die today. He will survive.
It was still enough to make a god feel small.
“However, the council has concluded that there is reasonable doubt about the supernatural influence on your mind and how much it contributed to your crimes. Therefore, you will be sentenced to a six-month rehabilitation program set and monitored by L. If he reports significant improvement by the end of your time then you will be acquitted under heavy supervision. If not, you will be executed.”

Light hasn't really had to think much about romance - outside of the obligatory, occasional outing with a girl, expected of the sort of guy he's seen as.
When he discovers feelings of genuine romantic attraction blooming from the least predictable source, he's surprisingly quick to accept it. After all, who else could ever be a worthy partner to the god of the new world but another god?

“I’m not doing this to kill people,” you say. That’s not how you want to use the notebook. You’re not going to kill people out of revenge, vengeance, anything like that. You’re only going to get rid of those who truly deserve it.
Ryuk laughs. It’s a loud, frightening sound that sends your heart racing again. “Right,” it says with a scoff. “I’ve heard that one before, trust me.”
