Summary
Let us start with some small things. A dead mouse. A broken vase, maybe. A candle. A dusty room with no door. Weeds growing in cracks. Cheap cloth, knitted blankets, no windows. Merlin shivers in the cold of the morning. He needs to graze Old Glen’s sheep, and when he gets back to town it will be too dark to repair the roof. His arms are too bony for a young man of sixteen, but the elderly grumble darkly and say he’s eating too much because his hips are too wide for boyhood. Merlin makes himself as small as possible on this frosty early morning, and keeps walking.
Despite everything, Merlin keeps walking.
