Heading through to the kitchen, Merlin went to flick the kettle on, stopped by the note propped up against it. ‘Bedroom ;) xxx’ it read in a familiar, untidy scrawl—although the author had evidently tried his best to print it slightly more neatly than usual. Merlin shook his head at the hand-drawn winky face, before actually taking in what the note said. He took the stairs two at a time, crashing into his childhood bedroom, stopping dead a step inside the doorway.

Arthur’s hands didn’t wait for his own permission once they had Merlin’s, and they began instantly the essential work of memorizing the feel of Merlin’s body changed. He didn’t fight the magnetism that drew him first to trace the long line that drew all the way across Merlin’s ribcage before running flattened palms up over the straight lines and hard muscle of his chest.
“Sorry you didn’t get to say goodbye,” Merlin quipped, and though his voice was still quiet and shaky, it almost sounded like he had managed a joke.
Arthur shook his head as his hands traveled across Merlin’s broad shoulders and trailed through the coarse, dark hair on his chest and down his arms. His voice was distracted. “Don’t be, you’re perfect.”-

It was supposed to be this: they get out of the castle so Arthur can be less of a prat, the knights have that weird banter that they always do where it’s ‘we can make fun of him but if anyone else tries, you will be eviscerated,’ and Merlin gets to enjoy being in the woods because it’s nice outside and he doesn’t actually have to do that much. They only tend to hunt small things like rabbits and birds anyway.
It was not supposed to be most of the knights having to stay behind for various reasons, including Gwaine who somehow got swept into helping Leon with a council thing.
It was not supposed to be just him, Arthur, and three random knights.
It was not supposed to end like this.

It was a genuine question, and one fraught with anxiety. Arthur heard Merlin’s insecurities as if he’d listed each one of them aloud. The sudden realization that under all the love between them, there was a part of Merlin—no matter how small or how deep—that was still unsure of his intentions poured over Arthur like a bucket of ice water upended. Maybe it should have hurt, but all it did was light a fire under him to prove to Merlin that all his fears were very much unfounded.
Arthur has a secret. So does Merlin.

The sheer depth of concern in it is the complete opposite of the reaction he was expecting and he finds he has to look away for a moment to collect himself. “I won’t tell a soul,” Leon continues, despite the fact Merlin can’t even meet his eyes. Sincerity bleeds into his words, the raw emotion from a moment ago seemingly in check, though when Merlin forces himself to look at Leon again, worry is etched clearly on his face. “Nobody is going to make you leave Camelot. I’m just so very sorry you’ve been carrying this alone for so long.”
