Summary
Assumed dead after his banishment, Zuko takes up The Blue Spirit mask. No one has seen his face in three years, and he won't let them. It's safer this way, being alone. After a Fire Nation general hires him to bring in Hakoda for questioning, he fails the job miserably and ends up a captive of the Water Tribe. When Sokka is employed by Iroh to track down Zuko and find out if he is still alive, The Blue Spirit claims that Zuko is in fact dead, and in a fit of panic, that he was the one who killed him.

1: Caught in a storm on Ember Island, the Gaang returns to Zuko's old family home, cold and wet. There, they make a welcome discovery about their fire bender companion.
2: “What’s wrong, nephew?”
Zuko bit his lip as the longing in his chest came rushing back. “I, uh, I can’t sleep. Will you…um, could you make some tea? Please?”---
Plagued by nightmares, Zuko seeks comfort in the form of his uncle's tea. He learns he's not the only one who is haunted by the ghosts of the past.
3: Toph knew she’d get a field trip eventually. She just had to bide her time and choose the right moment.
That moment came when—and how—she least expected it.

There was a hand on his back, softly rubbing a soothing pattern against his shoulders. Zuko flinched away from the touch as much as he could while his stomach rebelled. It wasn't enough and the hand stayed where it was.
It took a few minutes before he was able to stop dry heaving. When it was clear that nothing else was going to come up, Zuko rolled himself fully back onto the sleeping bag. His head hurt, it hurt a lot. Usually, his head felt fine after sleeping but today his brain felt expanded in his skull, pushing up against the inside and mashing all the squishy bits together.
He wanted to get up, wanted to get away from whoever was tucking him back into the warmth of his sleeping bag. He whined low in his throat as the hands nudged his arms into the bag, the sound leaving his throat with a rasp. His eyes weren't focusing on anything, which wasn't out of the norm for his left side, but his right eye was fine. He should be fine. He was fine.
(He wasn't fine.)
“Are you okay?” A deep voice asked.
(Zuko becomes a middle child, everyone is horrified by the new information that comes to light, and Hakoda wonders who he has to kill to make this scarred boy happy.

It was inevitable that Ozai's fate would be brought up during their peace talks, but Zuko couldn't have imagined what the conversation would come to. He had hoped that Aang's choice to spare his father would have been enough, but it wasn't. In the face of opposition from all sides, and a lack of trust from his own nation, he only has one tactic he can use.
Telling the truth.
Many a fic has done it, but I'm going to do it as well, combined with some of my favorite headcanons, hopefully a bit of originality, and no understanding of how to properly title something.
