Summary
There was a saying: the more that topside changed, the more the undercity stayed the same. And Viktor, who walks with a crutch and a brace in the Talis house colors and wears a uniform made from cloth that costs more than what a hundred workers in the mines could ever make in a year, has never been able to mask what he knows everyone sees everyday—a Zaunite. He always belonged to the place that kills the flowers. It doesn't matter that he’s stayed in Piltover longer than he has ever lived in the undercity. He was Viktor from Zaun then, and he remains Viktor from Zaun now, looking up at the last traces of light spilling from the skies that kissed Piltover.

Viktor is dying.
This is nothing new. He’s been dying since he was born, since he took his first acrid lungful of Fissure air, and he accepted his premature expiration long ago. Everyone has to die anyways, right? All the Fissure had done was move up the finish line.
That doesn’t make it any easier.

On account of the poor conditions in the Undercity orphanage where he was raised, and the assorted medical issues that have plagued him all his life, Viktor is a barren omega. He has not gone into heat once in the entirety of his adult life.
Until he meets Jayce Talis, and accidentally starts nesting in the Hextech laboratory.

“Yes, sir.” Jayce’s voice is already so helplessly light, almost airy.

Summary
Jayce’s fear of the cold persisted long after he nearly lost his mother in the snow storm. While he had told the story to Viktor countless times, he had never truly explained just how much it affected him to this day. The fear of losing those he loves the most bled into his affection for Viktor, and the treacherous winter in Piltover brings these emotions to a head.

Or, Jayce has childhood trauma from the snow and he’s so in love with Viktor that the thought of losing him exacerbates his PTSD. This is my first fic on AO3 and as a long time reader, I just hope I do these characters justice.

He closes his eyes and takes a deep breath, managing a step back from the edge, as it were. Keeps his eyes closed, focusing on the sensations, the obscene little sounds.
Then Viktor pauses. His movements stop, and a hand soothes down Jayce’s side, along his hip. He blinks his eyes open again, questioning.
Viktor is still looking up at him, searching for that eye contact. Only once their eyes meet again does he hum approvingly and return to his task. And…Jayce really can’t be sure in the dark, but he could have sworn there was something vulnerable, something almost anxious in his eyes there for just a moment.
Something saying, “please look at me,” and maybe not just purely for the power play of it. Something that twists painfully in Jayce’s chest and immediately makes him want to reach out and kiss Viktor with every bit of reverence he can muster and tell him all kinds of things that he really shouldn’t say. Because saying them out loud is not something they do. And because saying them out loud might get him too close to the flame again.

Summary
Viktor should have known, really. The euphoria of finding a kindred soul who understood him completely could only last this long before the reality of their differences caught up to them. He and Jayce have always been worlds apart even when they moved as one in a lab, it just happens that now, it is quite literal.
The question now is: is this punishment or a blessing in disguise?
Or. After his exile, Viktor reflects and makes the best of his situation. On his own side, Jayce tries to build Piltover back up and finds himself in a role he never wanted, or at least never alone.
