He saw flashes, first it was his own life that he burned through, then it was the shadow that killed the nemeton. Then it was someplace else, across an ocean where the people were dark skinned and wearing flowing white linen robes. Before that he burned a shadow out of the heart of a volcano, and before that he burned it from the heart of a man. Back and back and back he went until he existed in a lightless void, and there was a burning bundle of chaos that once went wrong, and it turned to ash at the last moment before light exploded around him and there was nothing but fire and distant stars.

“What day is it?” Derek demanded.
“What?”
“The day! What day is today?!” Derek let Stiles go, but only so he could reach into his pocket and pull out his phone. He tapped at the home screen, and then went so perfectly still that Stiles was pretty sure this guy wasn’t human. No human could stand that still.
When it was clear Derek wasn’t going to move again without some prompting, Stiles said, “It’s Wednesday.”
“That’s impossible,” Derek whispered.
“Not really, it comes around every seven days.”
“This is impossible,” Derek said again, looking around himself, as if he was searching for something.
