The Magnus Institute is calm, safe, interesting for the curious minds of the Baudelaires and, most importantly, far away from the US and Count Olaf. The children quickly discover the Archives and the unique people who work there - so, however, does their enemy.

Arthur is really just trying to be a nice guy. The hunting trip was supposed to fix his servant's surly mood, not keep him in it indefinitely. But then Arthur winds up trapped in a time loop and he's not even allowed to be mad that Merlin has magic because the guy keeps dying on him. This. Sucks.
In other words: my version of the "Arthur is far too reactive to be perpetually armed" magic reveal + a time loop.

“That’s what what says?” Arthur all but roars, wishing he had a sword just so that he could swing it at something. He needs to let all of this anger at something, anything, he’s just not sure at what and he doesn’t really care anymore.
“The treaty you signed."
Or:
Arthur lends Merlin's aid as a sorcerer to an allied kingdom. He doesn't expect to find Merlin, two years later, in shackles, and only a mere echo of the person he used to be.
