Summary
“Shit,” Jaskier swore, knowing what was going to happen even before he saw it: with all his weight back on them, Geralt’s legs buckled, folded. There was no grace to it, only hard impact against the wooden floorboards, and Jaskier winced. But Geralt didn’t stop there, didn’t simply sit and rest; no, his torso pitched forward, elbows bracing before his head could hit the floor, at least.
“Geralt!” Jaskier was by his side again in an instant, kneeling next to him, hands fluttering helplessly. He didn’t know where to touch, where it was safe. It was dark, the room’s lamps not yet lit and only faint moonlight coming through the window. “Shit. This is bad. Real bad.” It took a lot to best a Witcher. Even more so the White Wolf. Venom, usually, if Geralt’s halting recounts of past fights were any believable source.

Was standing just here, unwilling audience to Yennefer taking out her own grief on the nearest target, and while he’s long run out of patience for playing mediator to that disaster, he isn’t going to sit by and let Geralt cope with one of his loves pushing him away by taking the initiative and pushing the other away first.
Honestly, the nerve of it! He can’t hold it against him, he knows, but as if he would ever willingly leave. It’s been twenty years, what would he even do.

Summary
The crowd parts for Jaskier. He’s positively beaming, cradling his lute, the damn lute that has a scratch along the body from when Jaskier used it to bash a drowner in the face, when Geralt wasn’t close and fast and careful enough that one time.
Everything else about him is new and lavish and the filigree necklace resting on his collarbones catches the light.
He looks so at home at the center of attention, with the people chanting for him like a victorious general returning from battle. Even the royal couple is applauding much louder than etikett demands, the princesses clapping enthusiastically.
And this, this is how it should have been all along, this is what Jaskier deserves. Pride and shame wash over Geralt, so proud of the artistic genius finally fucking appreciated as it should be. And ashamed because he has no right to that pride anymore./
