Summary
Since the tender age of 9, Jiang Cheng has been convinced there is something growing within his chest.
He fancies it might be a rose bush, full of thorns that poke his lungs everytime his father praises Wei Wuxian while his mother compares his lacking skills to his adopted brother and his sister dotes on the older boy, first and foremost. Or maybe it's a cactus, one that parches his throat dry with a hacking cough when all his friends favor the cooler Jiang sibling and dismiss his minuscule insecurities. But sometimes he contemplates if it's poison ivy wrapping tightly around his esophagus, causing uncomfortable irritation when his childhood crush, flawless Lan Xichen doesn't notice him the way Jiang Cheng notices everything about the older boy.
He might not be certain what it is, but all he knows is that he is growing something so magnificent and indescribable.
And it hurts.
Yet no one believes him when he mentions the pain, when somedays the basic skill of breathing doesn't come easy. He catches the eye rolls, hears the scoffs, fumes at the blatant teasing, and clams up at the scolding he receives for his "exaggeration".
Though perhaps his imagination wasn't too far off the mark.

She tucks the cash into the waistband of her skirt along with the rest of her tips, and then she moves on—but not before sending a wink at Jiang Cheng over her bare shoulder.
Jiang Cheng distantly registers a sound that might be Wei Wuxian cackling, and then slowly comes to the awareness that his mouth is hanging open.
He shuts it.
(In which a closeted Jiang Cheng attends his very first drag show in the spirit of building bridges with Wei Wuxian. Along the way he begrudgingly makes new friends, reconnects with people from his past, and finds a sense of belonging he had not anticipated.)

Wishes made on paper lanterns have only two outcomes; they'll fly up into the sky, bringing those wishes to the heavens and coming true. Or they'll burn too fiercely, consuming the lanterns in flames before falling to the ground, forever forgotten.
Three short years have passed and nothing changed for Jiang Cheng. He carries on with his duties. He performs his task as one would expect a seasoned Sect Leader would. Nothing has changed and change is the last thing that he will ever want, for a long time.
Three long years passed and Lan Xichen still cannot bring himself to exit seclusion. His choices haunt him; his mistakes gnaws at his conscious. If only something will change. If only someone can help him make amends.
One fateful night hunt brings two Sect Leaders together in the unlikeliest of circumstances.

Which led Jiang Cheng to the moment he was currently in, gently trying to examine the deep gash in Jingyi’s side, parting the previously pristine white and pale blue robes to reach the blood soaked inner robe, and finding that said inner robe was neither blue nor white.
Jiang Cheng felt his hands tremble and he did a double take, absorbing that the color of the robes the kid was wearing looked suspiciously like Yunmeng colors, that specific color, fabric, and embroidery exclusive to the Jiang Family tailor.
