“What can I get you?”
Craig says nothing, just looks at Tweek. His gaze is intense and focused, almost unblinking as he stares into Tweek’s eyes. The longer Craig stands there, silent, the more Tweek starts to panic. This isn’t how this interaction is supposed to go. Craig’s not supposed to walk into the shop, and customers aren’t supposed to stay silent at the register. Also, Craig’s pretty tall which is hot, but also kind of scary when he leans over Tweek.
Tweek tics. “Can I help you?” He asks nervously.
It’s silent for a single beat.
“No.”
Then, just as quickly as he entered, Craig turns and leaves, the bell ringing as the door closes behind him.

Yet, he failed to do so and a new Kira rises to punish criminals, just as he had once before. In order to stop them and all others who would walk the same path, he investigates these serial murders. He takes in an alias, Y, and joins in the cat-and-mouse game of L and Kira, acting perfectly in the middle.
For L, Y is the variable most unknown to him in the Kira case. That is a stretch, he must admit, considering he is dealing with a supernatural serial killer, but he would rather that all mysteries of this case be solved, including someone with knowledge impossible to receive. Someone who sometimes helps with his investigation and, other times, works against him. Someone who he knows is Y but lacks the evidence he needs. Just who exactly are you, Light Yagami?

AU ending: L never died, Light went to a maximum security prison and Misa had her memories erased.
Instead of letting one of the worlds greatest/evilest minds rot away in a prison cell, L takes it upon himself to dedicate the rest of his life to taking care of the former mass-killer. L sees a lot of potential in Light and believes that, with time, patience and constant supervision, he can relearn empathy and be reborn.
