"Now, the winner of the Kansas State Fair Pie Competition, a drumroll please... number thirty-nine!"
Dean blinks rapidly, mouth falling open wide enough to catch flies as the bravado melts right away, replaced by a trickling of cold disappointment. The hoots and whistles fade away quickly, people already beginning to make the slow migration out of the tent to leave only a handful of people left. Donna and a couple of the other winners step forward for handshakes and certificates, but no-one collects the trophy. His trophy - and that's when Dean regains his voice.
"Second place? Well then who the hell got first?"
From the back of the small crowd steps a man, shoulders broad and chest deep, his teeth flashing white against a neatly-trimmed beard. He's wearing a white henley, suspenders, and high-waisted pants combo that has no business looking as damn hot as it does. Holy shit, Dean thinks, but the knee-jerk realization of attraction only serves to stoke the grudging anger.
"Guilty as charged." The man drawls, holding up huge, calloused hands.

He watches Sam’s finger point to the written words, “Dean still hardly talks,”.
A few beats of silence pass—nothing out of the ordinary, at this point.
“...Is this what’s happening?” Sam asks gently, implementing that tone of voice that always seems to remind Dean with a heart clenched in nostalgia that his brother is not a little boy anymore, but rather is now a grown man with an impressive emotional maturity.
(TLDR: Dean Winchester and selective mutism: told throughout different stages of his life now that it has come back in full-force yet again after losing Cas to the Empty. Angst, hurt/comfort, and most importantly: happy ending.)

Buck doesn't do therapy in person. Buck doesn't talk about his 1.0 days. Buck doesn't talk about his past sex addiction. What happened was consensual, and his fault, and the team clearly agreed, because they had joked about it. It's fine. It doesn't bother him anymore.
The Los Angeles courts don't quite agree. When probationary firefighter Victor Santana of Station 153 presses charges against Dr. Wells, the team come to realize just how deeply she hurt Buck - and how much Buck hasn't been dealing with it.

May realised a very long time ago that Buck was basically her stepbrother. So, when the lightning strike finally provided the impetus for Bobby to admit that he also brought a kid into their family, she had every intention of seizing the opportunity to properly integrate Buck into the Grant-Nash family.
And, look, if in the process she also gains a brother-in-law… clearly the universe was just waiting for the opportunity to make that happen.

Summary
Between leaving Hershey when he was not yet 19 and settling down as a firefighter in Los Angeles at 25, Buck led the life of a nomad, traveling through both North and South America. What he doesn't talk about is the part of the journey that brought him much farther away from home than any of his friends could ever imagine.
When Jack met the Doctor and started traveling with him, the other two companions traveling in the TARDIS with them changed his life just as much as the Doctor himself. Rose by changing the very essence of his being, and Evan by showing him a side of himself Jack had thought lost long before he had reached adulthood.
Even after their paths divert, Jack and Buck never forget the time spent together. And eventually, of course, Jack will catch up to Evan's time.
