You’ll be out on the street, looking for a job. That means all the time that we spent together, the lattes, the cancelled dates, the midnight snack runs, were all for nothing and all your dreams of being a published author will be gone.”
‘Holy shit I’m being blackmailed’, Daniel realises with abject horror.
Armand looks at him with a smug smile like he knows he’s won.
“Don’t worry, after the required allotment of time, we’ll get a divorce and you’ll be done with me. But until then, your wagon is hitched, to mine. Ok?” Armand goes back to sorting out paperwork and averts his gaze from Daniel, indicating that the conversation is over.

The boy is a speck on the side of the road. The only reason he stands out at all is that the world around him is so terribly, abysmally dull, and there is an explosion of vibrant blood streaking down his face and splattering his shirt. Other than that, he is bland--his brown curls coated in highway dust, his skin pallid from the blood loss, his clothes fashionable but wrinkled and worn.
He is holding his thumb out.
Armand pulls up next to him.
Or, the year is 1978. Daniel needs a ride, and Armand needs to feed. They have no idea that this chance meeting, which should have been deadly, will change their lives over the course of a journey from one side of America to another (with a few stops in between).

At that, the scientist looks at Daniel almost in awe. "You can discern that?"
Daniel clears his throat awkwardly. "Yeah…"
"Well, I have been alone working for a long time now."
Daniel nods at that and picks up his bag. Onto the next scientist… This one isn't worth his time. He walks off to find the next possible interview subject.
"Wait. What about it? Will you come with me?" The scientist shouts after him.
"Man, I've got like 3 more interviews to do before this party is over. You're not the most important guy in the room." Daniel stops and shrugs his bag higher on his shoulder.
"I beg to differ. No one else in this room is working on something that will change the world as we know it to be." He steps closer to Daniel.
